Nevada Bill of Sale Requirements
Nevada does not strictly require a separate bill of sale to title a vehicle, but one is strongly recommended as proof of the sale. Notarization is not required for a Nevada vehicle bill of sale. Nevada publishes an official form (Bill of Sale (Form VP-104)).
- Nevada's official form is the DMV Bill of Sale, Form VP-104 (Rev 01/2024), authorized under NRS 482.426 and NRS 490.082 (both citations appear in the form header, verified on the live PDF).
- The VP-104 requires only original buyer and seller signatures ('Signatures must be originals. Photocopies are not acceptable.') and contains NO notary block -- notarization is not required for a Nevada vehicle bill of sale.
- The DMV expressly states 'A Bill of Sale by itself is not acceptable'; it must be accompanied by the signed Certificate of Title (or other ownership documents) to title and register the vehicle, so the bill of sale mainly serves as the seller's record of the sale.
- Odometer disclosure is made in the Odometer Reading section of the Certificate of Title, not on the VP-104; for model-year 2011-or-newer vehicles the current mileage must be entered on the title at sale (model-year 2010-or-older vehicles are federally exempt).
- Off-highway vehicles use the same VP-104 (there is a dedicated OHV checkbox), and OHV sales may also use Form OHV-006.
Federal law (49 CFR Part 580, Truth in Mileage Act) requires the seller to disclose the actual odometer reading at transfer for vehicles under 20 model years old; model-year-2011-or-newer vehicles are NOT exempt (the 20-year exemption took effect Jan 1, 2021 for MY2011+; MY2010 became exempt Jan 1, 2020). Nevada implements this on the Certificate of Title -- the seller enters the current mileage in the title's Odometer Reading section. The VP-104 bill of sale itself has no odometer field, so the disclosure is captured on the title rather than the bill of sale. Vehicles meeting the federal age exemption (the Nevada DMV references model year 2010-or-older) may use the exempt option.
