Open Class Action & Data Breach Settlements You Can Claim

As of August 27, 2026, 8 consumer class action settlements are accepting claims, covering $214.8M in disclosed settlement funds. Many of them pay cash with no documentation at all. Filing is free and takes minutes. You do not need a lawyer, and you do not need to pay anyone.

Every settlement below is checked against the official administrator or the court docket, and each one shows the date we last verified it. We are not a settlement administrator and you cannot file a claim on this site. Each entry links you straight to the official site, which is the only place to file, and we make nothing from your claim.

How To Spot a Settlement Scam

Every large settlement attracts impersonators. The FTC warned about it during the Equifax settlement, and the pattern has not changed since: fake sites and fake notices appear within days of a real settlement making the news, and they are built to harvest exactly the information a breach victim is already worried about.

Three rules cover almost all of it. Filing is free, so anyone charging you a fee to file is stealing from you. Nobody legitimate contacts you out of the blue to ask for your Social Security number, bank account, or card details. And you should reach the claim site by typing the address yourself, never by clicking through an email or a text, because the link is the whole trick.

If you want to be certain a settlement is real, check the case name, case number, and court. Those appear on every settlement page here and on the official administrator site, and they are a matter of public record. A copycat site cannot survive that check. Report anyone who tries it at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

How to tell a settlement notice is real

Check the case name, case number, and court against the official settlement site. Go to that site directly instead of clicking a link in an email or text. Nobody legitimate will call, text, or email out of the blue asking for your Social Security number, bank account, or card details, and nobody will charge you to file. Report anyone who does at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

How Class Action Settlements Work

A class action lets one lawsuit cover everyone harmed the same way, which matters when the harm per person is too small to sue over alone. Nobody is going to hire a lawyer over a $50 loss. Grouped together, though, a few million of those become a case a company has to answer.

Most of these cases end in a settlement rather than a trial. The company pays into a shared pot, called a common fund, without admitting it did anything wrong. A judge then has to decide the deal is fair to the people it binds, because they were never in the room. That review is why the process takes so long.

The five words that decide what happens to you

Class member. You are in the group the settlement covers. This is the part people most often misread: being a class member does not mean you are getting paid. It means you are eligible to ask. If you never file a claim, you get nothing and you are still bound by the result.

Claim. The form you file to actually get your share. It is free, it is usually a few minutes online, and you do not need a lawyer. Class counsel is already appointed and gets paid out of the fund whether you file or not.

Opt out (exclusion). You leave the class entirely and keep your right to sue on your own. You also give up any claim to the settlement money. This is worth considering only if you suffered serious, documented harm and have talked to a lawyer about it. For most people with a small loss, opting out means trading a real payment for a lawsuit they will never file.

Objection. You stay in the class but tell the judge you think the deal is unfair. It is not the same as opting out, and the two get confused constantly. Objecting does not preserve your right to sue.

Final approval. The hearing where the judge decides whether to bless the settlement. Nothing gets paid before it, and nothing gets paid until any appeals afterward are resolved. This is why a settlement can be "approved" and still not have sent anyone a check months later.

Why the payout is smaller than the headline

A settlement advertised as paying "up to $10,000" will pay almost nobody $10,000. That ceiling is for documented losses: you have to prove real money left your pocket because of the breach, with statements, fraud reports, and receipts. Most people cannot trace a specific loss to a specific breach, which is exactly why the no-proof option exists.

The no-proof payment is the realistic outcome for most claimants, and it typically lands somewhere between about $20 and $100. It is also not a fixed number. The fund is a fixed size, so it gets divided among however many valid claims arrive. More claimants means a smaller check for everyone. That adjustment is called pro rata, and it is why no honest source will promise you an amount.

Many settlements also include free credit or identity monitoring, usually one to two years of it. Take it. It is part of what you are owed, it costs you nothing, and in some settlements you have to choose between the cash and the monitoring, so read which one you are picking before you submit.

What To Do After a Data Breach

A settlement claim is the last step, not the first. If your data was exposed, the most valuable thing you can do costs nothing: freeze your credit at all three bureaus. A freeze stops anyone from opening new credit in your name, it is free by federal law at Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion, and you can lift it any time you actually need credit. It is strictly better protection than any paid product for the specific risk of someone opening an account as you.

After that, enroll in whatever monitoring the settlement gives you for free, and read your statements. If something has already happened, the FTC's recovery tool at IdentityTheft.gov walks you through a personalized recovery plan and generates the letters you need. It is a government service and it is free.

Your state's breach notification law also decides what the company owed you and when. Our state-by-state data privacy guide covers what each state requires, and California is the only state that gives you a private right to sue over a breach directly.

After your settlement monitoring runs out

Free credit freezes and any monitoring your settlement includes should come first, and for most people that is enough. If you want continuous monitoring across all three bureaus once the settlement's one or two years of coverage expires, Aura covers your own credit, SSN, and accounts in one place.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a data breach class action settlement?

A data breach class action settlement is an agreement that resolves a lawsuit brought on behalf of everyone whose personal information was exposed in a company's security failure. The company agrees to pay into a common fund without admitting wrongdoing, a judge reviews the terms, and people in the affected group can file a claim for a share. Most settlements offer a choice between reimbursement of documented losses and a smaller flat cash payment that needs no proof.

How do I know if I am eligible for a data breach settlement?

You may be eligible if you received a data breach notice from the company, or if you fit the class definition the court approved, and you file a valid claim before the deadline. Each settlement page above lists its class definition and an eligibility checklist. If you are not sure whether you are in the class, the settlement administrator can confirm it. Being in the class is not the same as being paid: you still have to file a timely, valid claim.

Do I need proof to file a data breach settlement claim?

Often no. Most data breach settlements include a no-documentation cash option, sometimes called an alternative cash payment, that requires nothing but your attestation that you are in the class. You only need documentation if you are claiming reimbursement of specific out-of-pocket losses, which usually means bank statements, fraud reports, or receipts tied to the breach. Use the "no-proof claims only" filter above to see which settlements need nothing from you.

How much money will I actually get from a data breach settlement?

Usually far less than the headline number. No-proof cash payments in data breach settlements typically land somewhere between about $20 and $100, and they shrink if more people file than the fund anticipated. The "up to $10,000" style figures you see advertised are documented-loss ceilings that require you to prove real financial harm traced to the breach, and very few claimants receive them. Every amount is an estimate subject to pro-rata adjustment, and no specific payment is guaranteed.

Is RecordingLaw affiliated with these settlements?

No. RecordingLaw.com is an independent legal-information publisher. We are not a law firm, not a settlement administrator, and not affiliated with any court, agency, defendant, or claims administrator. You cannot file a claim here, and we never collect claim information. We link to each official administrator so you can file free at the source, and we make nothing from your claim.

How do I avoid data breach settlement scams?

File only at the official settlement website, and get there by typing the address yourself rather than clicking a link in an unsolicited email or text. Check the case name, case number, and court against that official site. No legitimate settlement charges a fee to file, and no legitimate administrator will call, text, or email you out of the blue asking for your Social Security number, bank account, or card number. Anyone who does is a scammer. Report it at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

How long after I file until I get paid?

Usually many months, and sometimes more than a year. Payments cannot go out until the judge grants final approval, and then only after any appeals are resolved and the administrator finishes validating claims. A settlement whose claim window closed can still be a long way from paying. The AT&T data breach settlement, for example, held its final approval hearing in January 2026 and, as of July 2026, had not yet issued payments.

What if I missed the claim deadline?

In almost every case you cannot still file once the deadline passes, and the courts enforce these dates strictly. What you can still do is protect yourself: place a free credit freeze at all three bureaus, watch your accounts and credit reports for accounts you did not open, and use the FTC's recovery tools at IdentityTheft.gov if something has already happened. You can also sign up above to hear about the next settlement that opens.
