How the calculator picks your minimum wage
The federal minimum wage is $7.25 an hour under 29 U.S.C. 206. Federal law lets a state set a higher rate, and when it does, the higher rate is the one an employer owes. The calculator shows the higher of the state rate and the federal rate for employers the federal Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) covers.
Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina and Tennessee have no state minimum wage law, so the federal $7.25 is the floor for covered employers there. Georgia and Wyoming set a state rate below $7.25; that lower rate reaches only employers the FLSA does not cover.
Tipped workers can be paid a lower cash wage where the law allows a tip credit, as long as tips bring them up to the full minimum. The federal cash wage is $2.13 (29 U.S.C. 203(m)). In 7 of the 51 jurisdictions (the 50 states and DC) there is no tip credit at all, so tipped workers there get the full minimum wage before tips. The pay estimate always uses the full minimum, because that is what a tipped worker must end up with.
The calculator reads today's date in your browser, so a raise that starts on January 1 or July 1 shows up on that day. Rates were checked against each state's labor agency or statute on October 21, 2026.

What this calculator does not do
- It shows the statewide general rate. Cities and counties in some states set higher local rates; the state guide lists them.
- It does not cover industry rates (such as California fast food and health care), small-employer or business-size tiers, youth, training or student wages, or workers who are exempt from minimum wage.
- It does not compute overtime. Over 40 hours a week, use the overtime calculator.
- Pay figures are gross, before taxes and deductions, at straight time.
- It does not tell you whether your employer is covered by the FLSA or your state law. If you think you were underpaid, the state guide names the agency that takes wage claims.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much is minimum wage a year?
At the federal $7.25 an hour and 40 hours a week, a full year is $15,080.00 before taxes ($290.00 a week x 52). At District of Columbia's $18.40, the same hours come to $38,272.00. Enter your state and weekly hours above for your number.
Which states raise the minimum wage on January 1, 2027?
As of October 21, 2026, increases set by law or announced for January 1, 2027 are on the books in California, Colorado, Connecticut, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, New Jersey, Ohio, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Virginia and Washington. Arizona and Vermont index their rates to inflation and had not confirmed a 2027 figure at the official source.
Which states have no minimum wage law?
Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina and Tennessee have no state minimum wage law. Employers covered by the federal FLSA must still pay $7.25 an hour. Georgia and Wyoming set a state rate below $7.25, so the federal rate is what covered employers owe there too.
What is the highest minimum wage in the US?
Among statewide rates, District of Columbia is highest at $18.40 an hour as of October 21, 2026. Some cities set higher local rates than any state.
Does the tipped minimum wage count tips?
Yes, where the state allows a tip credit. The employer pays a lower cash wage (federally $2.13), and tips must bring the worker up to the full minimum wage; if they do not, the employer makes up the difference. 7 jurisdictions do not allow a tip credit, so the full minimum is paid in cash before tips.
Is the federal minimum wage going up?
The federal minimum wage is $7.25 an hour and has been since July 24, 2009. It changes only if Congress amends 29 U.S.C. 206, so state laws are where raises happen.
