Birth, Death, and Marriage Certificates in Saskatchewan

eHealth Saskatchewan's Health Registries division issues Saskatchewan's birth, death, and marriage certificates, with fees running from $35 to $55 depending on the document type and format, and a free public genealogy index for records old enough to qualify.

Who Issues Vital Records in Saskatchewan

Saskatchewan's vital statistics function, covering births, deaths, marriages, and stillbirths, is administered by eHealth Saskatchewan, the province's health-information and IT agency, through a division it brands as Health Registries. That branding matters practically: a reader searching for a standalone "Saskatchewan Vital Statistics" office will land on an eHealth-branded site instead. The governing law is the Vital Statistics Act, 2009, SS 2009, c V-7.21.

Who Can Order a Birth Certificate

Section 63 of the Act, titled "Eligible Persons," entitles the subject of a live birth record, a person named on the statement of live birth as a parent, and others authorized in the manner prescribed by regulation to apply for a certificate or certified copy. eHealth's operational guidance fills in the practical detail: an applicant can be the individual themselves, if 15 or older; a parent of a child under 18 who appears on the original registration; someone with written authorization from an eligible individual; or the legal custodian or guardian. eHealth's own pages describe these as summaries and point to a fuller eligibility document for edge cases not covered by the summary.

Who Can Order a Death or Stillbirth Certificate

For a death record, section 63 limits eligible applicants to a spouse of the subject, a parent of the subject, or an adult child of the subject; eHealth's operational page adds the legal custodian or personal or property guardian to that list. For a stillbirth record, the Act limits eligible applicants to a parent of the subject or an adult sibling of the subject. Section 64 separately lets the registrar issue searches or certificates to non-relatives in specified circumstances, including compliance with a court order, a government official acting for a prescribed purpose, or police conducting a criminal investigation.

Who Can Order a Marriage Certificate

Section 63 entitles a party to the marriage or a child of the marriage to apply. eHealth's operational page adds a person with written authorization from an eligible individual, and the legal custodian or personal or property guardian of an eligible person.

Fees and Processing Times

Saskatchewan prices its certificates by document type and format rather than a single flat rate, confirmed directly on eHealth's live ordering pages.

No rush or expedited processing tier appears on any of the fee pages this article draws from. Processing times shift with demand and are posted as rolling dates rather than a fixed number of business days; eHealth's wait-times page should be checked directly for the current cutoff date before assuming a specific turnaround. Genealogical documents are stated to take roughly six to eight weeks, not including mailing time. Mail orders paid by cheque can add up to six further business days, since the certificate is not sent until payment has cleared.

How to Order

Online orders go through eHealth's vitalstats.ehealthsask.ca portal, paid by Visa, Mastercard, or their debit equivalents; genealogy portal sessions expire after 30 minutes of inactivity. Mail orders require the completed application form, supporting ID or documentation, and payment by cheque, money order, or credit card. In-person, walk-in service runs Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., at eHealth Saskatchewan's Regina office. Across birth, death, and marriage applications alike, eHealth states the same ID standard: one piece of government-issued photo ID, or two other pieces of ID that carry the applicant's signature, along with whatever event-specific supporting documents the eligibility guidelines require. eHealth can also be reached toll-free at 1-800-667-7551, by phone at 306-787-3251, by fax at 306-787-8951, or by email at vitalstatistics@ehealthsask.ca.

Older Records and Genealogy

Saskatchewan draws a clear line between a free searchable index and a paid certified copy. eHealth's Genealogy Index is free to search once a record clears a fixed age threshold: more than 100 years for births, more than 75 years for marriages, and more than 70 years for deaths. These same figures are set out in the Vital Statistics Regulations, 2010, sections 53 through 55, which state that a genealogical index may include information from a statement of live birth only after 100 years have expired from the year of the birth, from a death record only after 70 years, and from a marriage record only after 75 years.

Once a record clears its threshold, a certified genealogical copy costs a flat $55, regardless of event type, and takes roughly six to eight weeks to process, not including mail time. Genealogical death copies specifically exclude cause of death information, a caveat stated directly on eHealth's own genealogy ordering page.

Correcting an Error

The Vital Statistics Act, 2009 addresses corrections in several places: section 96(1) covers corrections to registrations generally, section 29 governs amendments relating to parentage, section 30 governs amendments arising from an adoption order, and section 31 permits amending a sex designation on application, supported by a statutory declaration and a letter from a health professional. eHealth Saskatchewan can be reached for a correction or amendment request by mail, by email at vitalstatistics@ehealthsask.ca, or by fax at 306-787-8951; a specific fee figure for a routine correction is not confirmed here and should be checked directly with eHealth before an applicant relies on it.
