Nova Scotia Vital Records: Birth, Death & Marriage Certificates

In Nova Scotia, birth, death, and marriage certificates are ordered through Vital Statistics, a division of the Department of Service Nova Scotia, under the Vital Statistics Act, RSNS 1989, c. 494, with most certificates costing $33.00 to $39.90 and a standard processing time of four to six weeks.

Who Issues Vital Records in Nova Scotia and Under What Law

Nova Scotia's vital records, meaning birth, death, and marriage certificates, are issued by Vital Statistics, a division of the Department of Service Nova Scotia. The office operates under the Vital Statistics Act, RSNS 1989, c. 494, as amended. As a general rule under that scheme, no certificate or certified copy of a birth registration may be issued except as the Act provides.

Most of the Act's own certificate-issuance sections could not be independently read for this article. The Legislature's published version of the Act is a font-encoded PDF that did not extract cleanly, and other direct attempts to reach the province's legislation site were blocked. That does not change what certificates cost or who can order them, which comes from Nova Scotia's own consumer-facing government pages and is set out below, but it does mean specific section numbers for the Act itself are not cited except where a related regulation could be read directly.

Who Can Order What

Entitlement rules differ by document type, and for death certificates, by which version you need.

Birth certificate. You can apply if you are the person named on the certificate, a parent named on the child's Birth Registration, a lawyer representing the person or their parents, an estate executor or trustee with proof, a legal guardian with documentation, or an authorized agent holding a signed consent form. The birth must have occurred in Nova Scotia.

Death certificate. Nova Scotia issues two tiers. A short form is available to anyone with a valid reason who can supply the deceased's core identifying details. A long form is restricted to immediate family, estate executors, or authorized representatives, and requires proof of the relationship or authority claimed.

Marriage certificate. The marriage must have occurred in Nova Scotia. The applicant must be a named party to the marriage, a lawyer acting for a named party, or someone holding that party's written authorization.

Fees and Processing Times

Nova Scotia's Vital Statistics fee schedule lists the following current fees:

Processing time is stated consistently as four to six weeks across the birth, death, and marriage certificate application pages, with the added caveat that it can take longer if the application is missing information or contains an error. No unsourced circulating figure was found that contradicts this timeline, so there is nothing to debunk here.

How to Order

Nova Scotia's primary ordering channel is online, through the province's online services portal for vital statistics. Payment online is by credit or debit card; cheque, money order, or cash may be accepted through other channels. An authorized-agent application needs a signed Consent for Agent or Authorized Person to Apply for a Birth Certificate form.

A couple of practical details were not confirmed on the pages available for this article. Neither the exact ID requirements for an application nor whether Nova Scotia runs its online portal in-house or through a third-party vendor could be confirmed either way. If either detail matters for your situation, confirm directly with Vital Statistics at (902) 424-4381 or vstat@gov.ns.ca before applying.

Older Records and Genealogy

Nova Scotia Archives already holds a large share of the province's historical vital records free and publicly searchable, with roughly one million names digitized and full-text searchable:

• Births: 1864 to 1877 and 1908 to 1924, plus delayed registrations from 1830 to 1924.
• Marriages: bonds 1763 to 1864, and registrations 1864 to 1949.
• Deaths: 1864 to 1877, Halifax specifically 1890 to 1908, and province-wide 1908 to 1974.

As of the Archives' last published update, 1925 births were being processed for a late spring 2026 release, so this free-access window is actively moving forward rather than fixed.

Records not yet transferred to the Archives stay with Vital Statistics and are ordered as standard certificates at the fees listed above: births from 1926 forward, marriages from roughly 1951 forward, and deaths from roughly 1976 forward.

A commonly cited transfer rule holds that records move to the Public Archives 100 years after a birth registration, 75 years after a marriage registration, and 50 years after a death registration. The arithmetic lines up exactly with the cutoffs above (2026 minus 100 is 1926, minus 75 is 1951, minus 50 is 1976), which is a strong corroborating signal, but the specific Act section commonly cited for that rule could not be independently read this article. Treat the rule itself as reliable and the exact section number as unconfirmed.

Certified paper copies of archived records can still be purchased through the Archives for official use.

Correcting an Error

Nova Scotia's Birth Registration Regulations, read directly from the province's regulations site, set out a detailed process for amending a birth registration in surrogacy and assisted-conception cases: court-ordered amendments in surrogacy cases; statutory-declaration amendments in non-surrogacy assisted-conception cases, signed by the birth mother, the intended parent, and any known donor; a requirement for the surrogate's written consent in surrogacy assisted-conception amendments; and a court process to waive that consent if the surrogate is deceased, incapable, or cannot be located.

For a general clerical error or omission outside those specific scenarios, for example a misspelled name, the practical route is contacting Vital Statistics directly at (902) 424-4381 or vstat@gov.ns.ca with supporting evidence. Additional fees may apply; each additional amendment to a birth or marriage record costs $24.95. The exact section of the Act governing an ordinary clerical correction could not be independently confirmed this article.

Nova Scotia also processes legal name changes and sex-designation changes to a birth registration; see the fee table above for current costs.
