North Carolina Dashcam Laws: Mounting, Recording, and Evidence Rules

Updates

Corrected the page description, which implied G.S. 20-127 contains a windshield-obstruction rule; the statute covers wipers and tinting.

Clarified that G.S. 20-127 also sends commercial vehicles to federal window rules, so its wiper and tint provisions are the only ones for passenger vehicles.

We corrected two traffic-stop statements (police generally need a warrant to search a dashcam but may hold it while they get one, and no court has held officers can never tell you to stop recording), limited the Fourth Circuit's Sharpe decision to what it held, corrected the window-tint limits in G.S. 20-127, and noted that commercial motor vehicles must follow federal windshield-mounting limits.

Corrected the windshield-mounting section: N.C. Gen. Stat. 20-127's current text covers only windshield wipers and window tinting, not a 'sign, poster, sticker, or nontransparent material' obstruction rule (that claim had no basis in the current statute and was repeated in the intro sentence, a KeyTakeaways bullet, a section heading, and the FAQ). Also fixed a stray editing note that misidentified Virginia as a two-party consent state (Virginia is one-party; replaced the example with Maryland, an actual two-party consent state).
