How to Cancel a Planet Fitness Membership
Independently fact-checked against primary sources (last audited October 22, 2026). · 11 primary sources cited on this page. How we verify our legal content
RecordingLaw.com is an independent legal information site. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Planet Fitness, and it cannot cancel a membership for anyone.
Planet Fitness's customer service page lists three ways to end a membership: send written notification by mail to your home club, visit your home club in person, or log into your account through the member portal on its website. The same page says to cancel at least 7 days before your next billing date, and at least 7 days before the annual fee date to stop that fee. It also says a $58 buyout fee is required when a membership with a minimum term ends before the contract term does.
That page also says, "Some policies and procedures may vary by location based on state and local guidelines." That sentence matters, because in many states a gym contract is also governed by a statute that sets cancellation rights the club's own policy cannot remove.

Jurisdiction scope: This page covers the cancellation channels, notice periods and fees stated on Planet Fitness's customer service page, examples of US state gym-contract statutes, and federal rules for disputing card and bank charges. It does not cover the terms of any individual club's membership agreement, which can differ, or memberships outside the United States.
Your state's gym cancellation rules
Checked against the statutes on October 21, 2026. Your contract and any exemptions in the statute decide whether a rule covers you.
How to cancel a Planet Fitness membership: the three channels
On its customer service page, under "How do I manage my membership?", Planet Fitness says:
"To end your membership, we offer multiple convenient ways for you to manage your account. You can send written notification via mail to your home club requesting to end your membership, visit your home club in person, or log into your account online through the member portal on the website. Some policies and procedures may vary by location based on state and local guidelines."
Each channel works a little differently in practice.
Online through the member portal
The online route is the member portal on the Planet Fitness website. The page says you can "log into your account online through the member portal on the website" to end a membership. This is what most people mean when they search for how to cancel a Planet Fitness membership online.
Before you close the browser, capture what the portal shows you at the end, with the date visible. If the portal sends a confirmation email, keep it. That record is your proof that you cancelled, and on what day.
By mail to your home club
The page says to "send written notification via mail to your home club requesting to end your membership." It does not give a central mailing address, so the letter goes to your home club, the club your membership belongs to.
Mail it in a way you can prove. Certified mail with a return receipt gives you a dated record of sending and delivery. Keep a signed and dated copy of the letter itself. Mail takes time, so send it well before the 7-day cutoff described below rather than on the last possible day.
In person at your home club
The third channel is a visit to your home club. If you cancel at the front desk, ask for something in writing that shows the date you cancelled, and note the name of the team member who helped you. A cancellation with no paper trail is hard to prove later if a charge appears.
How many days before billing you must cancel
Planet Fitness's page sets two deadlines:
"Please note, to stop the billing of your monthly membership on your next billing date, cancel your membership at least 7 days before your next billing date. To stop the billing of the annual fee, you must cancel your membership at least 7 days prior to the annual fee date."
The page adds that you can find your billing dates "by logging into your member portal at planetfitness.com or on your membership agreement." Check both dates before you act. A cancellation made inside the 7-day window, by Planet Fitness's own description, may not stop the next draft.
The page does not say whether a mailed letter counts on the day you send it or the day the club receives it. If you cancel by mail, leave enough time for the letter to arrive before the cutoff.
The $58 buyout fee and minimum terms
The page says: "if your membership has a minimum term and is ended prior to the end of contract term, a $58 buyout fee is required." The fee depends on whether your membership has a minimum term at all, which is set by your membership agreement.
State law can change what a member owes in specific situations, if the contract is covered by the state's statute. Illinois's Physical Fitness Services Act, for example, requires covered contracts to let a member who moves more than 25 miles from the center cancel when the center does not designate a comparable center within 25 miles of the new home that will honor the contract; the member then owes only for the time before showing reasonable evidence of the move, plus any contract fee capped at the lesser of 10 percent of the unused balance or $50 (815 ILCS 645/6(a)(2)). That act exempts government and nonprofit operators.
California's health studio law requires covered contracts to relieve a member of payment for services after the onset of a physician-verified disability that keeps the member from physically using the facilities, and requires a refund of unused prepaid money (Cal. Civ. Code 1812.89(a)).
Moving away: transfer or cancel
If you are moving, Planet Fitness offers a transfer to another club. Its customer service page says you can transfer online if all of these are true: you are not a minor, you have been a member for at least 90 days, you have not transferred in the past 90 days, you owe no outstanding dues or fees at your current club and do not have a financial cosigner or a third-party subsidized membership, and your membership is billed monthly rather than paid in full. Otherwise it says to contact your home club.
If you would rather cancel, some state statutes give a member who moves a right to cancel a covered contract. New York's lets a member cancel after the 3-day window on moving more than 25 miles from any club the seller operates; the club may ask for reasonable evidence and may keep expenses and the value of services used (N.Y. Gen. Bus. Law 624(3)).
If your home club closes
A club closing is a different situation from a member moving. Planet Fitness's billing FAQ says that if your home club is closed, you should contact its member services department, which it says is open Monday through Friday, 9 am to 6 pm Eastern. The FAQ does not say whether it means a club closed for the day or closed for good.
Some states give members a statutory right when a club stops operating. New York lets a member cancel if the services are no longer available or substantially available because the club permanently stopped operating or substantially changed its operation (N.Y. Gen. Bus. Law 624(1), (3)).
Franchise clubs and "may vary by location"
Planet Fitness's own pages show a mix of ownership. Its environmental policy says it "applies to Planet Fitness corporate offices and corporate-owned, leased and managed clubs" and speaks of working with franchisees, and its answer about training says trainers "must be employed by the club franchise location."
In practice, that means the club you joined, and the membership agreement you signed there, control the details. Read the cancellation section of your own agreement before you rely on the general customer service page, and direct a mailed letter to your home club's address.
How state law can add to Planet Fitness's policy
Many states have a statute written for health club or gym contracts. Where a statute sets the ways a club must accept a cancellation, a club's own policy cannot take those ways away for a contract the statute covers. Each act covers only the contracts it defines, so check the scope before relying on one. Three examples:
- New York: a covered health club must accept cancellation by website, email, phone, mail or in person, and if you could join on its website it must accept cancellation through the website; the 3-day cancellation itself goes by signed writing through mail or email (N.Y. Gen. Bus. Law 624(4)(c)-(d)). The article does not cover memberships in not-for-profit organizations or school and college programs.
- California: when the health studio law gives a right to cancel (such as the cooling-off period, a move or a disability), you may cancel in person, by email from an address on file with the studio, or by first-class mail (Cal. Civ. Code 1812.84(c)), and if you accepted an auto-renewing membership online, the business must also let you end it online (Cal. Bus. & Prof. Code 17602(d)(1)). The health studio law does not cover services by licensed health professionals, Education Code schools or diet-only programs.
- Texas: for the cancellations the chapter grants, the member sends written notice by certified mail to the spa's home office, with proof of payment for cooling-off and closure cancellations; the home office may not be your home club's address, so use the home-office address in your contract (Tex. Occ. Code 702.307-702.309). The chapter does not cover 501 tax-exempt organizations, member-owned private clubs or several other listed categories.
Many of these statutes also give a short cooling-off period right after you sign. California's runs to midnight of the studio's fifth business day after the agreement date, not counting Sundays and holidays, with longer windows for contracts of $1,500 or more (Cal. Civ. Code 1812.85(b)(1), (d)).
Not every state has a gym statute. The cancellation letter generator shows what your state's law says, or that it has none, and our guide on how to cancel a gym membership walks through the rules by type.
Writing a Planet Fitness cancellation letter
A letter is the channel that leaves the clearest record. A useful letter states your full name, your home club's location, that you are ending your membership, the date, and a request for written confirmation that billing will stop. If your state's statute gives you a specific right, citing it tells the club which rule you are relying on.
The letter generator builds a letter with your state's statute lines already in it. For example, see the versions for New York, California and Texas.
Keep proof of every step
Whichever channel you use, keep:
- a dated copy of your letter and the certified mail receipt and return receipt;
- a dated screenshot of the portal's final screen, and any confirmation email;
- for an in-person cancellation, any written confirmation and the name of the team member;
- your bank or card statements for the next two billing cycles, so you can see whether the drafts stopped.
If Planet Fitness keeps charging you after you cancel
Start with your home club and your proof of cancellation. If that does not resolve it, federal rules give you dispute rights, with deadlines.
Bank account drafts. Planet Fitness's page says many of its clubs accept monthly payment through checking accounts only, by electronic funds transfer. Federal Regulation E lets you tell your bank to stop a preauthorized electronic payment, orally or in writing, at least three business days before the payment is scheduled; if you call, the bank may require written confirmation within 14 days, and an unconfirmed oral stop order then lapses (12 CFR 1005.10(c)(1)-(2)). A stop-payment order is an instruction to your bank, not a cancellation, so cancel with the club as well.
Disputing a charge that already posted. For a debit or bank transfer, an error notice must reach your bank within 60 days after it sent the statement that first shows the charge (12 CFR 1005.11(b)(1)(i)). For a credit card, a written billing-error notice must reach the card issuer, at the address it gives for billing errors, within 60 days after it sent the first statement showing the charge (12 CFR 1026.13(b)).
If charges continue, a demand letter and the small claims court finder are the next steps for recovering money. If an unpaid balance is sent to a collector, see our guide to debt collection.
There is no federal "click to cancel" rule in force: a federal appeals court vacated the FTC's 2024 rule on July 8, 2025 (8th Cir. opinion). State law and your contract do the work. Our page on click to cancel laws covers the federal status in full.
