How to Cancel an LA Fitness Membership
Independently fact-checked against primary sources (last audited October 22, 2026). · 10 primary sources cited on this page. How we verify our legal content
RecordingLaw.com is an independent legal information site. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by LA Fitness or its operators, and it cannot cancel a membership for anyone.
LA Fitness's membership questions page says most club memberships are month-to-month and may be cancelled at any time in three ways: by mailing written notice to P.O. Box 54170, Irvine, CA 92619, in person at a club, or through your online account, "or as may otherwise be provided in your agreement." It adds that, depending on your state of enrollment, you may be able to cancel by email.
Timing matters. The page says a mailed cancellation postmarked at least 5 business days before your next billing date should result in no further billings. A separate rule applies if your membership still has time left on an initial term.

Jurisdiction scope: This page covers the cancellation channels, timing and fees stated on LA Fitness's membership questions page, the Federal Trade Commission's pending lawsuit against the operators of LA Fitness, examples of US state gym-contract statutes, and federal rules for disputing card and bank charges. It does not cover the terms of an individual membership agreement, which can differ.

How to cancel an LA Fitness membership
On its membership questions page, LA Fitness says "Most club memberships are month-to-month and may be cancelled at any time," and lists three numbered methods:
- "(1) by mailing written notice of cancellation to P.O. Box 54170, Irvine, CA 92619)", adding "(we recommend registered or certified mail and keeping a record for your files)"
- "(2) in person at a club (please see the front desk)"
- "(3) via your online account or as may otherwise be provided in your agreement"
The same page says that, "depending on your state of enrollment, you may be able to cancel by email."
By mail
The mailing address on the page is P.O. Box 54170, Irvine, CA 92619. LA Fitness itself recommends registered or certified mail and keeping a record for your files. A return receipt gives you proof of the date the notice arrived, and the postmark on a certified mail receipt gives you the date it was sent. Keep a signed copy of the letter.
In person at a club
The page says to see the front desk. Ask for a written confirmation that shows the date, and note who helped you.
Online
The page lists cancelling "via your online account." Capture the final screen with the date showing, and keep any confirmation email.
By email, in some states
LA Fitness says email may be available "depending on your state of enrollment." That lines up with state statutes that name email as a method a covered club must accept. California's health studio law, for example, lets a buyer cancel by email from an address on file with the studio when that law gives a right to cancel, such as the cooling-off period, a move or a disability (Cal. Civ. Code 1812.84(c)), and New York requires a covered health club to accept cancellation by email (N.Y. Gen. Bus. Law 624(4)(c)-(d)).
When to cancel: the 5-business-day rule
The page says:
"A mailed cancellation form postmarked at least 5 business days before your next billing date should result in no further billings. If notice is postmarked within 5 business days, you may be billed once more. If this occurs, we will refund that additional billing."
So for a mailed notice, LA Fitness ties the cutoff to the postmark date. Find your next billing date before you mail, and keep the postmarked receipt. If you are billed once more after a late postmark, the page says LA Fitness will refund it; ask for that refund in writing and keep the request.
The page also says that if you cancel, "you may still use the club for any pre-paid time."
Initial terms and the termination fee
Not every LA Fitness membership is purely month-to-month. For an agreement with "an initial term of three months or more," the page says that if "you're still within the initial term, your cancellation will be effective when the initial term ends," and that if "you wish to cancel before the end of the initial term, a termination fee will apply." The page does not state the fee amount; your membership agreement is where to find it. For questions about those cancellations, or about cancelling a paid-in-full agreement, the page says to visit your local club or contact LA Fitness.
State law can give a member a right to cancel a covered contract early in specific situations. Arizona's health spa law, for example, requires the contract to allow cancellation if you move your permanent residence more than 25 miles from the spa and from any affiliated spa offering similar services at no extra cost; the spa may keep the value of services used plus expenses of up to 25 percent of the total price (A.R.S. 44-1793(F), (H)). Arizona's law covers health spas that take prepayment and does not apply to member-owned private clubs, government facilities, fraternal or nonprofit spas, licensed health care institutions, or spas that do not take prepayment (paying within the 31 days the services are used is not prepayment).
The FTC lawsuit against LA Fitness's operators
On August 20, 2025, the Federal Trade Commission sued Fitness International, LLC and Fitness & Sports Clubs, LLC, the operators of LA Fitness, alleging they made it difficult for consumers to cancel gym memberships (FTC case page). The FTC's press release describes its allegations, including:
- "Consumers could only cancel with one specific employee"
- "Consumers were told that the mailed cancellation forms or requests should be sent certified or registered mail"
- "To start the process, LA Fitness has instructed consumers to log into its website and print a cancellation form."
These are the FTC's allegations, not findings. The case is pending, and the allegations have not been proven. The complaint describes the practices the FTC says occurred; the membership questions page quoted above describes the methods LA Fitness lists now.
The FTC's complaint invokes the Restore Online Shoppers' Confidence Act (ROSCA). For subscriptions sold online with automatic charges, ROSCA requires clear disclosure of the terms, the consumer's express informed consent, and simple mechanisms to stop the recurring charges (15 U.S.C. 8403). Separately, there is no federal "click to cancel" rule in force: a federal appeals court vacated the FTC's 2024 rule on July 8, 2025 (8th Cir. opinion). Our page on click to cancel laws covers the federal status.
How state law can add to LA Fitness's policy
Many states have a statute written for gym contracts, and where a statute sets the ways a club must accept a cancellation, a club's own policy cannot remove them for a contract the statute covers. Each act reaches only the contracts it defines. Examples:
- California: when the health studio law gives a right to cancel (such as the cooling-off period, a move or a disability), a buyer may cancel in person, by email from an address on file with the studio, or by first-class mail (Cal. Civ. Code 1812.84(c)).
- Illinois: for the cancellations the act grants (the 3-day cooling-off, a move, death or disability), the contract must let you send written notice by certified or registered mail to the contract address, online at the center's website if you signed up online, or to the email address in the contract if one was given (815 ILCS 645/6(b)). Government and nonprofit operators are exempt from that act.
- New York: a covered health club must accept cancellation by website, email, phone, mail or in person, and if you could join on its website it must accept cancellation through the website (N.Y. Gen. Bus. Law 624(4)(c)-(d)). The article does not cover memberships in not-for-profit organizations or school and college programs.
The LA Fitness page itself points the same way: it says email may be available depending on your state of enrollment, and that other methods may be "provided in your agreement." The cancellation letter generator shows what your state's statute says, and our guide on how to cancel a gym membership covers cooling-off periods, moving, disability and club closures.
Writing an LA Fitness cancellation letter
Address a mailed letter to P.O. Box 54170, Irvine, CA 92619, the address on LA Fitness's page. State your full name, your club, that you are cancelling your membership, the date, and a request for written confirmation that billing will stop. If your state's statute gives you a specific right, name it.
The letter generator adds your state's statute lines; see the versions for California, Illinois and New York.
Keep proof
- the certified or registered mail receipt and the return receipt, with a copy of the letter;
- a dated screenshot of the online cancellation and any confirmation email;
- any written confirmation from the front desk, with the staff member's name;
- your statements for the next two billing cycles.
If LA Fitness keeps charging you
Contact LA Fitness with your proof first. If the charges continue, federal rules set deadlines for disputes. For a debit card or bank transfer, an error notice must reach your bank within 60 days after it sent the statement that first shows the charge (12 CFR 1005.11(b)(1)(i)). For a credit card, a written billing-error notice must reach the card issuer, at the address it gives for billing errors, within 60 days after it sent the first statement showing the charge (12 CFR 1026.13(b)).
