How to Cancel a Crunch Fitness Membership

Crunch's FAQ says some clubs offer online cancellation through your Member Portal under "Manage Membership." Otherwise, it says to contact your club directly by phone or in person. Crunch also says the notice required before your next billing date may vary based on your Membership Agreement, and that cancellation policies vary by location based on state and local guidelines.
So the steps are: check whether your club offers the online option, read the cancellation section of your agreement, cancel in a way you can prove, and keep that proof. Crunch says it will ask for it if a cancellation is disputed.

Jurisdiction scope: This page covers what Crunch's FAQ says about cancellation, examples of US state gym-contract statutes, and federal rules for disputing card and bank charges. It does not cover the terms of any individual Crunch club's Membership Agreement, which Crunch says control the notice period.

How to cancel a Crunch Fitness membership online
Crunch's FAQ says: "Some clubs offer online cancellation through your Member Portal under Manage Membership."
The word "some" matters. If your club offers it, log into the Member Portal, open Manage Membership, and complete the cancellation there. Capture the final screen with the date showing, and keep any confirmation email. If your club does not offer it, Crunch's FAQ says to contact your club directly by phone or in person, and that you can find your club's number on Crunch's locations page. If you cancel by phone or in person, ask for written confirmation that shows the date, and note who helped you.
What Crunch says about notice and location
Two FAQ answers explain why the rules differ from club to club:
"The required cancellation notice prior to your next billing date may vary based on the terms of your Membership Agreement. Please check your membership agreement or speak to your Home Club for more details."
"Cancellation policies vary by location based on state and local guidelines."
Crunch's FAQ says, "Each location manages operations independently." Its website also has a franchise page that speaks to franchise owners ("As a Crunch franchisee, you present your community an incredible value"). Read your own agreement for the notice period, the cancellation address, and any fees, and send your notice to the place it names.
Crunch's FAQ also says: "If you have a month to month membership, your membership will continue until you request cancellation." A month-to-month membership keeps billing until you cancel it. Changing or removing your card does not end it either; Crunch's FAQ says, "Regardless of changing your credit card, a balance will see accrue on your account unless you request to cancel your membership. After a certain amount of time, your membership will go into collections." If an unpaid balance is sent to a collector, see our guide to debt collection.
Refunds and the proof Crunch asks for
The FAQ is narrow about refunds:
"The only valid reason for a refund is if you cancel within the first few days of having your membership (each state has laws for this grace period) OR if we missed your request by some extenuating circumstance. If you claim that you cancelled and your membership was not terminated, you will be asked to provide proof of the initial request."
Grace periods of this kind come from state cooling-off statutes, where a state has one, and the length depends on the state. New York's runs three business days after you receive your copy of the contract, by signed written notice sent by mail or email (N.Y. Gen. Bus. Law 624(2)). California's runs to midnight of the studio's fifth business day after the agreement date, not counting Sundays and holidays, with longer windows for contracts of $1,500 or more (Cal. Civ. Code 1812.85(b)(1), (d)).
Crunch's last sentence is the practical one: if a cancellation is disputed, you will be asked for proof of the request. Keep it from the start.
How state law can add to Crunch's policy
Many states have a statute written for gym contracts. Where a statute sets the ways a club must accept a cancellation, a club's own policy cannot remove them for a contract the statute covers, and each act reaches only the contracts it defines. Examples:
- Minnesota: a club must accept cancellation or termination given verbally in person or by phone, in writing by mail, email or a website message, through its online termination election, or in any other way you used to join that is no more burdensome, and the process must be easy (Minn. Stat. 325G.24, subd. 3). Minnesota also lets a member end a club membership at any time for any reason with no termination fee; it ends at the end of the current membership term, within 30 days for an at-will membership, or on a later date the member chooses (Minn. Stat. 325G.24, subd. 2). The law does not cover nonprofits, member-owned private clubs or government facilities.
- New York: a covered health club must accept cancellation by website, email, phone, mail or in person, and if you could join on its website it must accept cancellation through the website (N.Y. Gen. Bus. Law 624(4)(c)-(d)). The article does not cover memberships in not-for-profit organizations or school and college programs.
- New Jersey: clubs must accept a three-day cancellation by phone call to the club where you joined, by mail the club receives within the three-day period, by personal delivery, or online if you joined online, and online joiners must get a website link or button to stop automatic renewal (N.J.S.A. 56:8-42(e), (i)). The act covers health clubs that devote 40 percent or more of their square footage to fitness services or facilities.
The cancellation letter generator shows what your state's statute says, or that it has none. Our guide on how to cancel a gym membership covers moving, disability, death and club closures.
Writing a Crunch cancellation letter and keeping proof
If your club does not offer online cancellation, or you want a paper record, send a letter to the address your Membership Agreement gives for cancellation notices, or to your Home Club. State your full name, your Home Club, that you are cancelling your membership, the date, and a request for written confirmation. Send it by certified mail with a return receipt, and keep a signed copy.
The letter generator adds your state's statute lines; see the versions for Minnesota, New York and New Jersey.
Keep the mail receipts, the dated portal screenshot or confirmation email, any written confirmation from the club, and your next two statements.
If Crunch keeps charging you
Contact your Home Club with your proof. If charges continue, federal rules set dispute deadlines. For a debit card or bank transfer, an error notice must reach your bank within 60 days after it sent the statement that first shows the charge (12 CFR 1005.11(b)(1)(i)). For a credit card, a written billing-error notice must reach the card issuer, at the address it gives for billing errors, within 60 days after it sent the first statement showing the charge (12 CFR 1026.13(b)).
A demand letter and the small claims court finder can help recover money. There is no federal click-to-cancel rule in force; see click to cancel laws for the federal status.
