How to Cancel an Anytime Fitness Membership

RecordingLaw.com is an independent legal information site. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Anytime Fitness, and it cannot cancel a membership for anyone.
Anytime Fitness does not publish one cancellation method for all of its gyms. Its FAQ says: "All cancellation policies are outlined in the membership agreement for each location. The agreement covers the cost to cancel, how to cancel and more information on any additional termination fees you may incur." To cancel, start with the agreement you signed at your gym.

Jurisdiction scope: This page covers what Anytime Fitness's FAQ says about cancellation, examples of US state gym-contract statutes, and federal rules for disputing card and bank charges. It does not cover any individual location's membership agreement.
Your state's gym cancellation rules
Checked against the statutes on October 21, 2026. Your contract and any exemptions in the statute decide whether a rule covers you.
Why your Anytime Fitness location sets the rules
Anytime Fitness's FAQ says "Each of our locations are independently owned and operated and may have a slightly different policy regarding suspended memberships." It also says "Club dues, monthly fees and any additional charges are specific to each independently owned gym." Read the cancellation section of your agreement for the method, the address or contact, the notice period and any fee. If you no longer have a copy, ask your gym for one in writing.
How state law can matter
Many states have a statute written for gym contracts. Where a statute sets the ways a club must accept a cancellation, the gym's agreement cannot remove them for a contract the statute covers, and each act reaches only the contracts it defines. Two examples:
- Minnesota: a club must accept cancellation or termination given verbally in person or by phone, in writing by mail, email or a website message, through its online termination election, or in any other way you used to join that is no more burdensome (Minn. Stat. 325G.24, subd. 3). The law does not cover nonprofits, member-owned private clubs or government facilities.
- Illinois: for the cancellations the act grants (the 3-day cooling-off, a move, death or disability), the contract must let you send written notice by certified or registered mail to the contract address, online at the center's website if you signed up online, or to the email address in the contract if one was given (815 ILCS 645/6(b)). Government and nonprofit operators are exempt from that act.
The cancellation letter generator shows your state's rule, or that it has none, and builds a letter with it. See the Minnesota and Illinois versions for examples. Our guide on how to cancel a gym membership covers cooling-off periods, moving, disability and club closures.
Keep proof, and dispute charges in time
Send your cancellation the way your agreement or your state's statute provides, and keep a record: a certified mail receipt and copy of the letter, a dated screenshot or email, or a written confirmation from the gym. If charges continue, an error notice for a debit or bank transfer must reach your bank within 60 days after the statement that first shows the charge (12 CFR 1005.11(b)(1)(i)); for a credit card, a written billing-error notice must reach the issuer within 60 days after the first statement showing it (12 CFR 1026.13(b)). A demand letter can follow if money is still owed to you.
