Alaska Fireworks Laws (2026): Age-18 Minimum, No Sale Window

Frequently Asked Questions

Are fireworks legal in Alaska?

Yes. Consumer fireworks may be sold statewide by permit-holding retailers under Alaska Stat. § 18.72.020, from a dedicated structure or stand and not within 250 feet of a residence or public assembly. A city or borough ordinance can still restrict this more than the state does.

Is there a minimum age to buy fireworks in Alaska?

Yes. Alaska sets an 18-year purchaser age minimum by regulation: 13 AAC 50.025, Alaska's fireworks amendments to the International Fire Code, states fireworks 'may not be sold to person under the age of 18 years' (IFC § 5608.11.10). Violating that rule is a class B misdemeanor under Alaska Stat. § 18.72.040.

When can you buy fireworks in Alaska?

There is no statewide sale or use date window in Chapter 18.72 or in 13 AAC 50.025. Sale runs through the state's permit and licensing system rather than a fixed calendar range, though the state fire marshal can suspend sale or use in areas under a declared high or extreme wildfire danger.

What is the penalty for violating Alaska's fireworks law?

A class B misdemeanor under Alaska Stat. § 18.72.040, with each day of noncompliance counted as a separate offense. The same penalty applies to violating fireworks regulations adopted under the chapter, including the age-18 purchaser rule.

Can you mail fireworks from Alaska?

No. USPS Publication 52 § 341.22 states that all types of fireworks are prohibited from mailing.
