Italy's Driving Licence Points System (Punti Patente): The Points Table Explained

Frequently Asked Questions

How many points does a new driving licence start with in Italy?

20 points, under art. 126-bis C.d.S., recorded in the national register of licensed drivers regardless of which licence category was issued.

Can I check my own points balance online?

Yes. The Portale dell'Automobilista, the official government portal, shows a driver's current balance to the licence holder using SPID or an electronic identity card. This page cannot look up an individual reader's own balance.

How many points does speeding cost in Italy?

3 points for exceeding the limit by 10 to 40 km/h, 6 points for 40 to 60 km/h, and 10 points for more than 60 km/h over the limit, under art. 142 C.d.S.

Does using a phone while driving cost more points the second time?

No. The point deduction stays at 5 points each time. A second violation within two years increases the fine and adds a longer licence suspension, not a larger point loss.

What happens when a licence reaches zero points?

The holder must sit a mandatory retest (esame di idoneita tecnica) within 30 days of notification. Missing that deadline suspends the licence indefinitely until the driver complies.

Can a driving licence ever hold more than 20 points?

Yes, up to a ceiling of 30. Two full years without a point-losing violation earns a 2-point credit for a licence already at 20 or above, and that credit can repeat until the licence reaches 30.

Does the new short suspension (sospensione breve) wipe out a driver's points?

No. It is a separate, automatic licence suspension of 7 or 15 days that applies alongside the ordinary point deduction and fine, only when the driver's balance is already below 20 points at the time of the violation.

Are point losses really doubled for new drivers?

Yes, for the first three years after a first category B licence or higher is issued. A small offsetting bonus of up to 3 points over that period does not come close to cancelling the doubling out.
