The points system, and what changed in 2024

Every Italian licence starts with 20 points, and specific violations, speeding, running a red light, using a phone while driving, cost a fixed number of points set out in an official table. A single stop can never cost more than 15 points at once, and losing every point triggers a mandatory retest rather than an automatic loss of the licence. A major reform, Legge 177/2024, took effect on 14 December 2024 and rewrote several of the rules a driver relies on: phone use penalties rose and now carry a suspension even on a first offence, new driver restrictions extended from one year to three, and an entirely new automatic short suspension now applies to several violations once a driver's points balance has already fallen below 20. Drink driving is not one offence with one penalty. Disputing a fine

Where a driver disagrees with a fine, Italian law offers two routes, and they are mutually exclusive: a free administrative appeal to the Prefetto, filed within 60 days, or a court opposition before the Giudice di Pace, filed within 30 days.
