Knife Laws in France: Is It Legal to Carry a Knife?

France does not set a simple legal blade length the way some countries do. Instead, French law treats knives as regulated weapons. Is it legal to carry a knife in France?

There is no blanket right to carry a knife in France, and no length threshold below which a blade is automatically legal to carry. French weapons law sorts every regulated item into a category, and almost all knives, from a small pocket knife to a kitchen or hunting knife, fall into category D.

Category D covers weapons that adults may generally buy and keep at home without a permit. Carrying or transporting them in public is a different matter. Taking a category D weapon outside the home, including leaving one in a vehicle, is prohibited unless the person can show a legitimate reason during a police check. That is why the honest answer to "is it legal to carry a knife" is: usually not, unless a legitimate reason applies.

What counts as a legitimate reason

The law does not list every acceptable purpose. A legitimate reason (motif legitime) is an objective, verifiable purpose connected to the circumstances, assessed case by case by the police and, in a dispute, by the prosecutor or a judge. They weigh the place, the time, and the surrounding context.

Reasons that are commonly accepted include heading to or from a fishing trip with fishing equipment, hunting with a valid licence, or carrying the tools of a trade such as cooking, farming, or fishing. Buying a knife and taking it straight home is also generally fine. What is not accepted is carrying a blade for self-defence, to feel safer, or "just in case." French authorities treat that as carrying without a legitimate reason, even for a small everyday knife.

The penalty for carrying without a legitimate reason

The offence sits in Code de la securite interieure article L317-8. Being found carrying, or transporting without a legitimate reason, a category D weapon is punishable by one year of imprisonment and a fine of 15,000 euros. For a category C weapon, the maximum is two years and 30,000 euros. A narrow list of very low-danger items is excluded by ministerial order.

For a category D item that is not a firearm, the law offers a lighter path. If the person voluntarily surrenders the weapon to the officer for transfer to the State and possible destruction, the case can be closed through a fixed criminal fine (amende forfaitaire) of about 500 euros rather than a prosecution. Local authorities can also issue temporary orders banning the carrying of knives around specific events or areas, which adds an extra layer on top of the national rule.

The 2025 reform: zombie knives and brass knuckles

An order of 4 July 2025 and decree n 2025-894 of 5 September 2025 rewrote part of the rules on edged weapons (armes blanches). Their headline effect was to move the most dangerous items out of category D and into category A1, the prohibited tier.

Two groups were reclassified as prohibited A1 weapons. The first is the zombie knife: a fixed blade with a cutting edge, a pointed tip, and a serrated section, combined with either several holes in the blade or several sharp points. The second is the brass knuckle (poing americain) manufactured after 1 January 1900, along with certain hybrid weapons that combine a brass knuckle with a blade or firearm. Individuals and shops holding these items had to surrender them to a police station or gendarmerie by 7 December 2025. Keeping one after that date is punished far more heavily than an ordinary carrying offence: up to five years in prison and a 75,000 euro fine.

New rules for sellers: category Da

The same reform created a restricted commercial category known as Da. It captures items that are not outright banned but are considered dangerous enough to control at the point of sale, such as butterfly knives, automatic (spring-assisted) switchblades, throwing stars, and certain hybrid tools.

Shops that are not licensed gunsmiths but want to keep selling category Da items must apply to their prefecture for authorization by 7 March 2026 and comply with security and display obligations, including signage that bars sales to minors. For an ordinary buyer this mainly means these blades become harder to find on general sale, not that owning one already lawfully held is suddenly criminal.

How weapon categories work in France

French law ranks weapons from A to D by dangerousness. Category A covers prohibited weapons, with A1 as the strictest prohibited sub-tier. Category B requires authorization, category C requires a declaration, and category D can generally be acquired freely by adults.
