Western Australia Demerit Points Lookup
Western Australia sets its novice demerit thresholds by how far into the provisional licence a driver is, rather than by P-plate colour. This page explains how that structure and the good behaviour period work, before you check your own points against the threshold below.
Licensing authority: Department of Transport and Major Infrastructure (DTMI). Checked as of 26 September 2026.

threshold: 12 points
12 points below the threshold
A Western Australia full licence driver is suspended at 12 demerit points (points counted over a rolling 3-year period). You are currently 12 points below that.
See Western Australia demerit points for the full ladder and offence values, and confirm your official standing with Department of Transport and Major Infrastructure (DTMI).
This tool compares a demerit-point total against the published suspension threshold for the chosen licence class in each Australian state and territory. It does not access your driving record, and the exact points against you depend on the offences as recorded, your licence class and the accrual window. Only your state or territory licensing authority can confirm your official standing. This is general information, not legal advice, and RecordingLaw.com is not a government body or a law firm.
Thresholds by Licence
The point total that triggers action depends on the licence you hold. These are the Western Australia limits the lookup applies.
| Licence | Threshold | How points are counted |
|---|---|---|
| Full licence | 12 points | Points counted over a rolling 3-year period |
| Provisional, second year | 8 points | Points counted over a rolling 3-year period. WA sets the novice threshold by provisional-licence year, not P-plate colour (red plates cover only the first 6 months). |
| Provisional, first year | 4 points | Points counted over a rolling 3-year period |
| Learner | 4 points | Points counted over a rolling 3-year period |
How the threshold depends on your provisional-licence year
Western Australia sets its novice thresholds by how far into the provisional licence a driver is, not by P-plate colour. A learner, and a provisional driver in the first year, reach the limit at 4 points. A provisional driver in the second year reaches it at 8. A full licence holder reaches it at 12.
All three thresholds are tested against the same rolling three year window. It is the ceiling that changes as a driver moves through the provisional years, not the length of time points are counted.
The good behaviour period option
A full licence holder with 12 or more points who has been personally served with an Excessive Demerit Points Notice can elect, within 21 days of service, a 12-month good behaviour period instead of the disqualification.
During that 12 months, accruing more than one further demerit point doubles the disqualification stated on the original Excessive Demerit Points Notice.
Double demerit periods
During declared long weekends and holiday seasons, Western Australia doubles the demerit points for some offences, including speeding, failing to wear a seatbelt and using a mobile phone while driving. The specific dates are announced each year, so a driver should confirm the current dates rather than assume a given weekend is included.
What this lookup does not do
This tool checks a point total against the suspension threshold for the licence class you select. It does not reproduce Western Australia's offence by offence demerit point schedule, and it cannot confirm your actual point balance.
Contact the Department of Transport and Major Infrastructure (DTMI) directly to confirm your own record.
For offence-level detail and the full Western Australia rules, see Western Australia demerit points. To compare every state and territory, use the all-states demerit points lookup.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does WA decide which demerit threshold applies to me?
By how far you are into your provisional licence: 4 points from your learner's permit until the end of your first provisional year, 8 until the end of your second provisional year, and 12 on a full licence.
Can a novice driver in WA use the good behaviour period option?
No. The good behaviour period is for full licence holders with 12 or more points who have been personally served with an Excessive Demerit Points Notice. The election must be lodged within 21 days of service. A novice driver who is disqualified has the licence cancelled.
When do double demerits apply in WA?
During declared long weekends and holiday seasons, the demerit points for some offences (such as speeding, seatbelt and mobile phone offences) are doubled. The specific dates are announced each year.
Can this tool tell me how many points a specific ticket is worth?
No. It checks a point total against the suspension threshold for the licence class you select. It does not reproduce Western Australia's offence by offence point schedule.
