Queensland Demerit Points Lookup
Queensland gives an open licence a long, three year runway, but a learner, P1, P2 or provisional licence is measured over a much shorter one year window instead. This page explains how that shorter window works, and how Queensland's double demerit rule differs from the holiday-linked version used elsewhere, before you check your own points against the threshold below.

threshold: 12 points
12 points below the threshold
A Queensland open licence driver is suspended at 12 demerit points (points counted over a rolling 3-year period). You are currently 12 points below that.
See Queensland demerit points for the full ladder and offence values, and confirm your official standing with Department of Transport and Main Roads.
This tool compares a demerit-point total against the published suspension threshold for the chosen licence class in each Australian state and territory. It does not access your driving record, and the exact points against you depend on the offences as recorded, your licence class and the accrual window. Only your state or territory licensing authority can confirm your official standing. This is general information, not legal advice, and RecordingLaw.com is not a government body or a law firm.
Thresholds by Licence
The point total that triggers action depends on the licence you hold. These are the Queensland limits the lookup applies.
| Licence | Threshold | How points are counted |
|---|---|---|
| Open licence | 12 points | Points counted over a rolling 3-year period |
| Provisional or learner | 4 points | Points counted over any 1-year period |
How the threshold and window differ by licence
Queensland gives an open (full) licence a much longer runway than a learner, P1, P2 or provisional licence. An open licence is tested over a rolling three year window, while every other licence class in Queensland is tested over a single, much shorter one year window.
For newer drivers the threshold is not just lower; it is also counted over a shorter window, any 1-year period. Points do not reset when you move from a learner to a provisional licence, or from provisional to open. A learner, P1, P2 or probationary driver's total is measured against only the last twelve months, not the last three years.
Queensland's double demerit rule is year-round, not holiday-linked
In Queensland, double demerit points are not limited to holiday periods. The doubling rule is for repeat offences and applies at any time of year.
The offence groups this applies to are speeding by more than 20 km/h over the limit, mobile phone offences, seatbelt offences, failing to ensure a passenger under 16 is properly restrained, and motorcycle helmet offences. The second offence does not need to be identical to the first, it only needs to fall in the same group.
The good driving behaviour option
An open licence holder who gets 12 or more points within 3 years is sent an accumulation of demerit points notice to choose, and can choose a 1-year **good driving behaviour period** instead of the suspension by notifying the Department by the due date on the notice.
Provisional and probationary licence holders get the same choice at 4 points: a 3-month suspension or a 1-year good driving behaviour period, where 2 or more points means a 6-month suspension. A class C learner licence has no good driving behaviour option; 4 points in a year means a 3-month suspension.
For an open licence holder, picking up 2 or more further demerit points during the good driving behaviour period doubles the suspension that would otherwise have applied.
What this lookup does not do
This tool checks a point total against the suspension threshold for the licence class you select. It does not reproduce Queensland's offence by offence demerit point schedule, and it does not confirm your actual, current point balance.
Contact the Department of Transport and Main Roads directly to confirm your own record.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many points can I have on an open Queensland licence?
12 or more demerit points within a rolling three year period triggers a licence sanction notice for an open (full) licence.
Why is the demerit window so much shorter for learner and P-plate drivers in Queensland?
Learner, P1, P2 and provisional licence holders are tested against a one year window rather than the three year window used for an open licence, and the threshold itself is lower too.
Does Queensland double demerit points over Christmas and Easter like some other states?
Queensland's doubling rule is not a holiday scheme. A second or later offence in the same offence group, committed within 1 year of an earlier one, carries double points at any time of year, including holidays.
What is the good driving behaviour option in Queensland?
An open licence holder who gets 12 or more points within 3 years is sent an accumulation of demerit points notice to choose, and can choose a 1-year good driving behaviour period instead of the suspension by notifying the Department by the due date on the notice. Picking up 2 or more further points during it doubles the suspension. Provisional and probationary licence holders get the same choice at 4 points (3-month suspension or 1-year good driving behaviour period, where 2 or more points means a 6-month suspension); a class C learner licence has no good driving behaviour option, and 4 points in a year means a 3-month suspension.
Can this tool tell me how many points a specific ticket is worth?
No. It checks a point total against the suspension threshold for the licence class you select. It does not reproduce Queensland's offence by offence point schedule.
