Victoria Demerit Points Lookup
Victoria gives a full licence a straightforward three year limit, but a learner permit or P1/P2 probationary licence is measured by a dual test instead. This page explains how that dual test and the demerit point extension choice actually work, before you check your own points against the threshold below.

threshold: 12 points
12 points below the threshold
A Victoria fully licensed driver is suspended at 12 demerit points (points counted over a rolling 3-year period). You are currently 12 points below that.
See Victoria demerit points for the full ladder and offence values, and confirm your official standing with VicRoads.
This tool compares a demerit-point total against the published suspension threshold for the chosen licence class in each Australian state and territory. It does not access your driving record, and the exact points against you depend on the offences as recorded, your licence class and the accrual window. Only your state or territory licensing authority can confirm your official standing. This is general information, not legal advice, and RecordingLaw.com is not a government body or a law firm.
Thresholds by Licence
The point total that triggers action depends on the licence you hold. These are the Victoria limits the lookup applies.
| Licence | Threshold | How points are counted |
|---|---|---|
| Fully licensed | 12 points | Points counted over a rolling 3-year period |
| Probationary or learner | 5 points | A dual test: 5 points in any 12 months, OR 12 points over 3 years. Victoria applies whichever limit is reached first. This tool uses the lower 5-in-12-months limit. |
The threshold for a full licence
A driver who holds a full Victorian licence is measured against a single rolling three year window. Only offences from within that three year period count toward the threshold, so an older offence stops counting once it passes the three year mark.
The dual test for learner and probationary drivers
A learner permit holder or a P1 or P2 probationary driver is tested against two limits at once, a **dual test**: a shorter window measured over 12 months, or a longer window measured over 3 years, whichever is reached first.
The choice at the threshold: suspension or a demerit point extension
VicRoads notifies you and you choose between a licence suspension (3 months, plus 1 month for every 4 points over the limit) and a 12-month demerit point extension. If you do not choose the extension by the due date on the notice, the suspension applies.
If you commit any offence that carries demerit points, or that suspends or cancels your licence, during the 12-month extension, the suspension is applied and its length is doubled.
What this lookup does not do
This tool checks a point total against the suspension threshold for the licence class you select. It does not reproduce Victoria's offence by offence demerit point schedule, and it does not confirm your actual, current point balance.
Contact VicRoads directly to confirm your own record.
For offence-level detail and the full Victoria rules, see Victoria demerit points. To compare every state and territory, use the all-states demerit points lookup.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many demerit points before a full Victorian licence is suspended?
12 demerit points within a rolling three year period for a full licence.
What is different about the threshold for P1, P2 and learner drivers in Victoria?
They face a dual test rather than a single number: a shorter limit measured over 12 months, and a separate, higher limit measured over 3 years, whichever is reached first.
What happens once I reach my demerit point threshold in Victoria?
VicRoads notifies you and you choose between a licence suspension (3 months, plus 1 month for every 4 points over the limit) and a 12-month demerit point extension. Committing any demerit point offence during the extension means the suspension applies at double the length.
Can this tool tell me how many points a specific offence is worth?
No. It checks a point total against the suspension threshold for the licence class you select. It does not reproduce Victoria's offence by offence point schedule.
