Report a crime to Victoria Police online through Report Online or by phone on the Police Assistance Line 131 444, and request a copy of a crime report or a traffic accident report through Victoria Police's separate online applications rather than a freedom of information request.
How to report a crime to Victoria Police
For an emergency in progress, call 000. For a non-urgent report, Victoria Police offers Report Online, or you can call the Police Assistance Line on 131 444. An online report generates a Notice to the Victim, which carries a reference number you can use later, including when applying for a copy of the report or making an insurance claim.
Getting a copy of a Victoria Police crime or accident report
Victoria Police runs two separate application services, neither of which is a freedom of information request. Fees for both are set under the Victoria Police (Fees and Charges) Regulations 2024 and are indexed every 1 July.

Crime reports
If you suffered property loss or property damage, you can apply for a copy of a crime report already registered with Victoria Police through its Search for a crime report (property loss or property damage) application, or authorise someone to apply for you. Victoria Police's current published fee (updated 30 June 2026) is $81.20 for a crime report.
Traffic accident reports
A traffic accident report uses a separate online Traffic Accident Report Application Form. Any person who is injured or suffers property damage in a traffic accident can apply, as can a personal representative or an authorised representative such as an insurer, with written authority. Every application needs a statutory declaration under the Victoria Police Act 2013 and an approved form of identification. Allow a minimum of 10 working days for processing.
The current fee (updated 30 June 2026) is $89.80 for an accident report, which includes the first 10 pages of statements and photographs combined, and $1.00 for each additional page, with no added charge for additional pages in emailed reports. If no-one was injured and all parties exchanged name and address details, Victoria Police says it will not normally make a formal report of the accident.
Duty to report a crash to police in Victoria
The crash duties are in Part 6 of the Road Safety Act 1986, section 61 for motor vehicles and section 61A for other vehicles. As Transport Victoria summarises them, a driver involved in a crash must stop, help anyone injured, and give their details to the others involved and to police if they are there. If anyone is injured and police are not at the crash, the driver must report the crash to the nearest police station. The same applies if property is damaged and the owner (or police) is not there.
False reports to Victoria Police
Knowingly making a false report to police is an offence under section 53 of the Summary Offences Act 1966 (Vic), titled making false reports to police etc. The maximum penalty is 120 penalty units or 1 year imprisonment. Victoria's penalty unit value is set annually by the Victorian Treasurer and gazetted; for the 2026-27 financial year it is $209.10, which puts the maximum fine for a false report at $25,092. Because the dollar conversion changes each financial year, confirm the current penalty unit value before quoting a fine amount in a specific matter.

Support for victims of crime in Victoria
The Victims of Crime Helpline, run by the Victorian Government, is on 1800 819 817 (text 0427 767 891) and connects victims with the Victims Assistance Program and other services. A Notice to the Victim from an online report also lists support services you can contact.
Other Victorian records: not the same as a police report
A police report documents a specific incident, such as a crime you reported or a Notice to the Victim from an online report. That is a different product from a police check, which searches a person's criminal history for background-screening purposes; see our Victoria police check guide if a criminal history check is what you actually need. If the application services above do not cover your situation, the formal fallback is a freedom of information request; see our Victoria FOI guide for how that process works. For how reporting and record requests work in other Australian states and territories, see our police reports hub.
