How to Get a Nevada Death Certificate (2026)

You get a certified Nevada death certificate from the state Office of Vital Records in Carson City (or the county where the death occurred). Each certified copy costs $22 or $25 depending on the county. Only family members, guardians, or legal representatives with a direct interest qualify.
How Do You Get a Death Certificate in Nevada?
You get a Nevada death certificate from the state Office of Vital Records, part of the Division of Public and Behavioral Health, located at 4150 Technology Way, Suite 104, Carson City, NV 89706. The state office holds death records for events that occurred from July 1, 1911 forward.
Nevada gives you three main ways to request a certified copy.
Order online
The fastest option is to order online through VitalChek, the state-authorized vendor, or by calling VitalChek at 877-456-5410. An extra vendor processing fee applies on top of the certificate cost.
Order by mail
To order by mail, complete the application for a death record, then send a copy of your photo ID, proof of relationship, and full payment to the Office of Vital Records. Send a check, money order, or cashier's check payable to the office. Do not mail cash.
Order in person
You can also apply in person at the Carson City customer service window. Cash is accepted only for in-person requests. Bring your photo ID and proof of your relationship to the deceased.
County option
For deaths that occurred before July 1, 1911, contact the County Recorder in the county where the death took place. For recent deaths in Clark County, you can also work through the Southern Nevada Health District in Las Vegas.
Who Is Eligible to Request a Nevada Death Certificate?
Only a qualified applicant may obtain a certified Nevada death certificate. The state defines a qualified applicant as the registrant, a direct family member by blood or marriage, the person's guardian, or his or her legal representative.

You must show a direct and tangible interest in the record. In practice that means you provide proof of your relationship to the deceased along with your photo identification.
Funeral directors, estate executors, and attorneys acting on behalf of an eligible family member can also request copies when they document their authority. If you cannot establish a qualifying relationship, the office will not release a certified copy.
Nevada Death Certificate Cost and Processing Time
A certified Nevada death certificate costs $25 each when the death occurred in Carson City or in Clark, Douglas, Lyon, Mineral, or Washoe County. In every other Nevada county, each certified copy costs $22.
Nevada charges the same flat fee for each copy, so there is no discounted rate for additional copies ordered at the same time. Five copies simply cost five times the per-copy fee.
Processing time depends on how you order. Mailed requests take longer than in-person pickups, and online VitalChek orders can add expedited shipping for an extra fee. Because turnaround changes with volume, confirm the current timeframe with the office before you order if you are on a deadline. The office's recorded fee and information line is (775) 684-4242.
Certified vs Informational Copy in Nevada
A certified copy is the official document you need for legal and financial tasks such as settling an estate, claiming life insurance, closing accounts, or transferring property. It carries the state seal and is accepted as legal proof of death.

Unlike states such as California, Nevada does not sell a separate watermarked informational copy to the general public. The certified copy is the standard product the Office of Vital Records issues, and access is limited to qualified applicants.
If you only need the information for genealogy or personal records, you still order through the same channel and must meet the eligibility rules. Plan to request a certified copy.
How to Get Additional or Replacement Copies
To get additional or replacement copies, you submit the same application and pay the per-copy fee again for each certificate. There is no separate replacement form; a new certified copy is simply a new order.

If a copy is lost or damaged, request a fresh certified copy through VitalChek, by mail, or in person. The same photo ID and proof-of-relationship rules apply every time.
Order a few extra copies up front if you expect to handle several estate or insurance matters. Banks, insurers, and government agencies often each want their own certified copy, and ordering together saves a second trip or mailing.
