How Long Does a DBS Check Take? Turnaround Times & Tracking

A Standard or Enhanced DBS check usually takes around 14 days, according to gov.uk's own published guidance, though incorrect applicant details or a check involving several police forces can push it longer. A Basic DBS check runs on a separate, faster track: usually up to 3 days if you apply for it yourself, or up to 14 days if an employer applies for you.

How Long a Standard or Enhanced DBS Check Takes

Gov.uk's step-by-step guidance for employers requesting a Standard or Enhanced check states a single headline figure, under a "How long it takes" heading:

"It usually takes around 14 days but it can take longer if: the details given for the check are incorrect; several police forces need to be involved in the check. You cannot pay more to get a faster check."

That is DBS's own current expectation, not a third-party estimate. It applies to Standard and Enhanced checks, including Enhanced with barred list(s). The two named causes of delay are worth taking seriously before you apply: double-check every name, address and date of birth on the form, since a mismatch sends the application back to the countersignatory for correction rather than moving forward, and be aware that a longer address history or a role near force boundaries can mean more than one police force has to be involved.

There is no way to pay for a faster Standard or Enhanced check. Whatever route you request through, an ordinary Enhanced check runs on the same timeline as any other.

Basic DBS Check: Two Timeframes, Not One

A Basic check does not follow the Standard/Enhanced figure above, and it does not have a single published turnaround time either. Gov.uk states two different figures depending on how the check is requested.

If you apply for your own Basic check online at gov.uk, using GOV.UK One Login, it usually takes up to 3 days. If an employer requests a Basic check on your behalf through a Responsible Organisation, gov.uk's guidance for that route states up to 14 days instead. Both are official figures from gov.uk; they simply describe two different application paths, and neither should be quoted as the single "Basic check" turnaround. See the Basic DBS check guide for the full application requirements for each route.

The 5 Stages Behind Every DBS Check

Gov.uk's employer guidance breaks a DBS check into five stages. Which stages apply depends on the level.

Basic and Standard checks go through stages 1, 2 and 5 only; they never touch stage 3 or 4. Stage 4, the police records search, is the stage that drives almost all of the real-world delay on an Enhanced check, because it depends on the capacity of the individual police force involved rather than DBS's own processing speed.

How to Track Your DBS Application

DBS runs two separate online tracking services, and which one applies depends on the check level.

For a Basic check, the applicant, employer, or Responsible Organisation can track progress through the DBS online tracking service at disclosure.homeoffice.gov.uk. No account is needed just to check status; you will need the application reference number, the applicant's surname, and their date of birth.

For a Standard or Enhanced check, the applicant tracks through a different service, the DBS tracking service at secure.crbonline.gov.uk/enquiry/enquirySearch.do, using the application reference number and date of birth. Employers registered with DBS can track multiple applications at once and order blank forms through the linked multiple-enquiry search tool. Tracking is free and does not require separate registration.

What Causes an Application to Slow Down

Beyond incorrect details and multi-force involvement, identity validation is a common delay point. Registered Bodies must run DBS's three-route identity checking process to confirm the applicant's name, date of birth and address. If identity cannot be validated this way, the countersignatory has to flag it on the application form and return it to DBS, which can trigger a review before the application proceeds.

Applicants who cannot supply the necessary identity documents through the standard process are asked to attend fingerprinting at their local police station instead, which gov.uk's own guidance describes as likely to cause further delay to the overall application.

If an Enhanced Check Is Taking Longer Than Usual

DBS does not publish a single national number of days after which you can escalate a stuck application. What does exist is DBS customer services as the contact point for a delay, including one caused at the police stage: 03000 200 190 or customerservices@dbs.gov.uk.

Separately, some individual police forces publish their own internal review target for Enhanced checks awaiting stage 4. Durham Police and Crime Commissioner's official page states a 60-day escalation target for reviewing Enhanced checks, while noting that some applications are taking up to 100 days, and directs applicants to DBS customer services rather than the force itself. This is a per-force figure, confirmed for Durham specifically, not a DBS-wide standard. If your Enhanced check is stalled at the police stage, check whether your own police force publishes an equivalent status page before assuming a fixed national deadline applies.

DBS Adult First: The Only Official Fast-Track

DBS Adult First is the one officially published expedited product, and it is narrow in scope. It is for care-sector roles and costs £6. It confirms, usually within around 2 days, whether an applicant can start work under supervision on a provisional basis while the full Enhanced check is still being processed, or whether they must wait for the Enhanced result before starting. It is not a faster version of the Enhanced check itself; it is a supervised-start decision that runs alongside it.

No Published Percentage-Based Turnaround Rate

DBS does not publish a granular breakdown such as "a given share of checks complete within a set number of days" for Standard or Enhanced checks. A dataset that once did this, DBS dataset 5 on police disclosure unit performance, was formally withdrawn on 18 August 2021. Figures such as "85% within 14 days" or "95% within 25 days" that still circulate on third-party checking-service sites trace back to that withdrawn dataset and should not be treated as a current official standard.

What DBS does still publish quarterly is dataset 1, covering DBS checks, the Update Service, and disputes, as a statistical spreadsheet rather than a headline figure. It is available for anyone who wants the underlying quarterly volumes, but it does not replace the withdrawn per-level percentage breakdown, and gov.uk's plain-English expectation remains the "usually around 14 days" figure quoted above.

Scotland and Northern Ireland: Different Systems, Different Times

A DBS check only exists for roles in England and Wales. Scotland and Northern Ireland run their own separate disclosure systems with their own published turnaround figures, so a DBS turnaround time never applies to either.

Scotland (PVG scheme): Disclosure Scotland's most recent published figures, for the quarter running April to June 2026, show an average processing time of 3.5 days and 99.5% of applications completed within 14 days. Disclosure Scotland has warned that older circulating figures are significantly out of date, so treat this as a live, quarterly-updated metric rather than a fixed number. See the Disclosure Scotland and PVG guide for how the Scottish system's levels compare to DBS.

Northern Ireland (AccessNI): nidirect publishes a turnaround table that it refreshes weekly. The figures below are captioned with the week they were published; check the live nidirect page for the current week's numbers before relying on them.

Table below reflects the week beginning 17 August 2026:

See the AccessNI check guide for fees and what each level shows.

Avoiding a Repeat Wait

The turnaround times above apply each time you go through a fresh Standard or Enhanced application. If you already hold a Standard or Enhanced certificate and expect to need checking again for a similar role, subscribing to the DBS Update Service lets an employer check its status online instead of you waiting through the process again from scratch. It does not apply to Basic certificates, which get a separate online services account instead.

This article is for general information only and is not legal advice. Turnaround times depend on individual circumstances, including police force capacity, and can change; check the live gov.uk, Disclosure Scotland or nidirect pages linked above for the current figures. Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a DBS check take?

Gov.uk states a Standard or Enhanced check usually takes around 14 days, longer if the details given are incorrect or several police forces need to be involved. You cannot pay more to get a faster check. Basic checks run on a separate timeline: usually up to 3 days if you apply yourself, or up to 14 days if an employer applies through a Responsible Organisation.

Why is my Enhanced DBS check taking so long?

Enhanced checks go through an extra stage, a local police records search, that Basic and Standard checks skip. That stage depends on the capacity of the individual police force involved, which is the most common reason an Enhanced check runs past the usual 14-day expectation. Incorrect applicant details and identity-validation problems are the other common causes.

How do I track my DBS application?

Basic checks are tracked through the DBS online tracking service at disclosure.homeoffice.gov.uk, using the application reference number, surname and date of birth. Standard and Enhanced checks use a different service, the DBS tracking service at secure.crbonline.gov.uk, using the reference number and date of birth. Tracking is free for both.

Is there a faster or paid option for a DBS check?

No. Gov.uk states plainly that you cannot pay more to get a faster Standard or Enhanced check. The only officially published fast-track product is DBS Adult First, a separate £6 service for care-sector roles that confirms within around 2 days whether an applicant can start work under supervision while the full Enhanced check continues.

What can I do if my Enhanced DBS check is taking much longer than expected?

DBS customer services is the contact point for a delayed application, including one held up at the police stage, on 03000 200 190 or customerservices@dbs.gov.uk. Some individual police forces, including Durham, publish their own roughly 60-day internal target for reviewing Enhanced checks, but this is a pattern set by individual forces rather than a DBS-wide rule, so it is worth checking whether your own force publishes an equivalent page.

Does DBS publish an official percentage of checks completed on time?

Not currently. A dataset that once published a percentage-within-days breakdown for police disclosure unit performance was withdrawn on 18 August 2021. Any '85% within 14 days' style figure still seen online comes from that withdrawn dataset and should not be treated as a current official standard. DBS does still publish quarterly volume statistics separately.

How long does a PVG or AccessNI check take?

These are separate systems, not DBS checks. Disclosure Scotland's most recent published PVG figures show an average processing time of 3.5 days, with 99.5% completed within 14 days. Northern Ireland's AccessNI publishes a weekly turnaround table, most recently showing Basic and Standard averaging around 2 days and Enhanced around 5 days, though its processing targets vary by check type.
