Read this before relying on a number

  • This is an informational lookup, not a decision. It reports the published demerit points and composition amount for a speed and vehicle class. The Traffic Police decide whether to offer composition, and the court decides the penalty in the two highest bands.
  • The demerit points are Driver Improvement Points System (DIPS) thresholds under the Road Traffic Act 1961. Points can build toward a suspension or revocation, so a high-points offence matters beyond the immediate amount.
  • From 1 January 2026, a School Zone, Silver Zone, or Friendly Streets zone offence carries an extra 2 demerit points and $100 on the composition amount, capped at $500. That addition does not apply to the court bands.
  • Speeding more than 40 km/h over the limit is not compoundable and is prosecuted in court, which sets its own penalty.
