South Australia Demerit Points Lookup
South Australia disqualifies a full licence holder who reaches 12 or more demerit points within a rolling 3 year period, and a provisional licence holder who reaches just 4. This lookup checks your point total against the threshold for your licence class, and the sections below explain how that threshold, and the options available once you reach it, actually work.

South Australia demerit points
0
threshold: 12 points
12 points below the threshold
A South Australia full licence driver is suspended at 12 demerit points (points counted over a rolling 3-year period). You are currently 12 points below that.
See South Australia demerit points for the full ladder and offence values, and confirm your official standing with Service SA / Department for Infrastructure and Transport.
This tool compares a demerit-point total against the published suspension threshold for the chosen licence class in each Australian state and territory. It does not access your driving record, and the exact points against you depend on the offences as recorded, your licence class and the accrual window. Only your state or territory licensing authority can confirm your official standing. This is general information, not legal advice, and RecordingLaw.com is not a government body or a law firm.
Thresholds by Licence
The point total that triggers action depends on the licence you hold. These are the South Australia limits the lookup applies.
| Licence | Threshold | How points are counted |
|---|---|---|
| Full licence | 12 points | Points counted over a rolling 3-year period |
| Provisional or learner | 4 points | Points counted over a rolling 3-year period. SA provisional drivers (not learners) facing a first 4-point disqualification can instead elect a Safer Driver Agreement within 28 days: the current licence is surrendered for a newly issued P1 or P2 licence. A breach doubles the disqualification. |
How the demerit threshold works in South Australia
South Australia disqualifies a full licence holder who reaches 12 or more demerit points within a rolling 3 year period. A provisional licence holder faces a much lower bar: reaching 4 or more demerit points, or breaching a licence condition, is enough to trigger a disqualification notice.
These are the two thresholds this lookup checks your points against. The table above shows the exact figures and the window for the licence class you selected.
The good behaviour option for full licence holders
A full licence holder who is issued a disqualification notice can elect a good behaviour option instead of serving the disqualification straight away, provided the election is made within 28 days of the notice being issued.
The good behaviour option runs for 12 months. Gaining 2 or more further demerit points during that period doubles the original disqualification, and there is no right of appeal and no second election available.
The Safer Driver Agreement for provisional drivers
A provisional driver facing a first disqualification for reaching 4 or more demerit points, rather than a learner permit holder, may instead be able to elect a Safer Driver Agreement within 28 days.
Electing the agreement means surrendering the current provisional licence in exchange for a newly issued P1 licence for 3 years if the offence was committed on a P1 licence, or a P2 licence for 2 years if it was committed on a P2 licence, rather than serving a straight disqualification.
Breaching the agreement doubles the disqualification that would otherwise have applied.
How long points count and when they are recorded
Demerit points apply from the date the offence was committed, not the date of a conviction or the date an expiation notice is paid.
Points are only added to a driving record once the relevant expiation notice is paid or a court finalises the matter, and once recorded they apply back to the offence date. Points expire 3 years after the offence date.
What this lookup does not do
This tool checks a point total against the disqualification threshold for a chosen licence class. It does not show how many points a specific offence carries, does not access an official driving record, and is not a substitute for confirming your position with Service SA.
For offence-level detail and the full South Australia rules, see South Australia demerit points. To compare every state and territory, use the all-states demerit points lookup.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many demerit points can I have before losing my licence in South Australia?
A full South Australian licence holder is issued a disqualification notice at 12 or more demerit points within a rolling 3 year period. A provisional licence holder reaches that point at just 4 or more demerit points, or by breaching a licence condition.
What is the good behaviour option in South Australia?
It is an election a full licence holder can make within 28 days of a disqualification notice, choosing a 12 month good behaviour period instead of an immediate disqualification. Gaining 2 or more points during that period doubles the disqualification, with no appeal and no second election.
What is a Safer Driver Agreement and who can use it?
It is an option for a provisional driver, not a learner permit holder, facing a first disqualification at 4 or more demerit points. Electing it within 28 days surrenders the current provisional licence for a newly issued P1 or P2 licence instead of a straight disqualification. Breaching the agreement doubles the disqualification.
When do demerit points expire in South Australia?
Points apply from the date the offence was committed, not the date of conviction or payment, and expire 3 years after that offence date.
Does this tool tell me how many points a specific offence carries?
No. This lookup checks a point total against the disqualification threshold for a licence class. It does not list offence by offence point values. Confirm those, and your official record, with Service SA.
