Australian Capital Territory Demerit Points Lookup
The ACT sets a demerit threshold for each licence class, from 2 points for a probationary licence up to 12 for a full licence, but every class is measured over the same rolling 3 year period. This lookup checks your point total against the threshold for the licence class you select.
Licensing authority: Access Canberra. Checked as of 26 September 2026.

threshold: 12 points
12 points below the threshold
A Australian Capital Territory full licence driver is suspended at 12 demerit points (points counted over a rolling 3-year period). You are currently 12 points below that.
See Australian Capital Territory demerit points for the full ladder and offence values, and confirm your official standing with Access Canberra.
This tool compares a demerit-point total against the published suspension threshold for the chosen licence class in each Australian state and territory. It does not access your driving record, and the exact points against you depend on the offences as recorded, your licence class and the accrual window. Only your state or territory licensing authority can confirm your official standing. This is general information, not legal advice, and RecordingLaw.com is not a government body or a law firm.
Thresholds by Licence
The point total that triggers action depends on the licence you hold. These are the Australian Capital Territory limits the lookup applies.
| Licence | Threshold | How points are counted |
|---|---|---|
| Full licence | 12 points | Points counted over a rolling 3-year period |
| Provisional or learner (post-2020) | 4 points | Points counted over a rolling 3-year period |
| Learner licence issued before 1 Jan 2020, not since renewed | 12 points | Points counted over a rolling 3-year period. A legacy pre-2020 ACT learner licence kept the 12-point threshold. |
| Probationary | 2 points | Points counted over a rolling 3-year period. The ACT probationary licence has a much lower threshold: 2 points. Reaching it means the probationary licence is cancelled, with a 6-month period off the road. The ACT counts points over 3 years for every licence class. |
How the demerit threshold works across ACT licence classes
A full ACT licence is suspended at 12 or more demerit points. A provisional licence, or a learner licence issued or renewed after 1 January 2020, is held to a much lower 4 point threshold.
A learner licence issued before 1 January 2020 and not renewed since keeps the older 12 point threshold rather than the current 4 point standard. A probationary licence has its own, much stricter 2 point threshold.
Every one of these classes is measured over a 3 year period, which Access Canberra calculates from the date of the most recent offence. The 3, 4, 5 and 6 month figures attached to each class are the length of the suspension or cancellation once the threshold is reached, not a shorter accrual window.
What happens once you reach the threshold
For a full licence, reaching 12 to 15 points brings a 3 month suspension, 16 to 19 points brings 4 months, and 20 or more points brings 5 months.
A provisional licence, and a learner licence issued or renewed after 1 January 2020, face a 3 month suspension at 4 points. A legacy learner licence issued before 1 January 2020 faces the same 3 month suspension, but only once it reaches 12 points.
A probationary licence is treated differently again. Reaching 2 points does not bring a suspension, it brings cancellation of the licence, with a 6 month period off the road.
The good behaviour option for full licence holders
The ACT's good behaviour option is available to full licence holders only. It is not offered to learner, provisional, probationary or restricted licence holders.
During the 12 month good behaviour period, the demerit point threshold drops to just 2 points. Reaching 2 or more points during that period means a suspension of double the original suspension period.

What this lookup does not do
This tool checks a point total against the threshold for the licence class you select. It does not show how many points a specific offence carries, and it does not replace confirming your record and your licence class with Access Canberra.
For offence-level detail and the full Australian Capital Territory rules, see Australian Capital Territory demerit points. To compare every state and territory, use the all-states demerit points lookup.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many demerit points can I have before losing my licence in the ACT?
It depends on licence class. A full licence is suspended at 12 points, a provisional licence or a learner licence issued or renewed after 1 January 2020 at 4 points, and a legacy learner licence issued before that date at 12 points. A probationary licence is cancelled at 2 points. All are measured over a 3 year period. All are measured over the same rolling 3 year period.
Does the ACT count probationary demerit points over 6 months instead of 3 years?
No. The 6 months attached to a probationary licence is the length of time the licence is cancelled for once 2 points are reached, not the accrual window. Access Canberra counts every licence class, including probationary, over the same rolling 3 year period.
What happens if an ACT probationary licence reaches 2 demerit points?
The probationary licence is cancelled, and the driver is off the road for 6 months, rather than facing the suspension that applies to other licence classes.
What is the ACT's legacy learner licence rule?
A learner licence issued before 1 January 2020 and not renewed since keeps the earlier 12 point threshold, rather than the 4 point threshold that applies to a learner or provisional licence issued or renewed after that date.
Can a learner or provisional driver in the ACT elect a good behaviour option?
No. The good behaviour option is available to full licence holders only. It is not offered to learner, provisional, probationary or restricted licence holders.
How do I check my demerit points in the ACT?
