France Points Recovery Course (Stage de Recuperation de Points)

In France, a points recovery course, known formally as a stage de sensibilisation a la securite routiere and commonly called a stage de recuperation de points, is the fastest way to rebuild a driving licence balance that traffic offences have eroded. It is a voluntary two-day class that credits points back to your licence without waiting for the automatic recovery periods to run their course. Understanding how it works matters because the rules are strict and often misstated by the commercial sites that sell course bookings.

What a points recovery course is

The course is a structured road safety class delivered over two consecutive days of seven hours each, fourteen hours in total. The programme mixes a general awareness module with a specialised half covering either speed or driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. There is no exam and no test to pass. Simply attending the full two days is what triggers the point credit.

The course is run under Articles L223-1 and following of the Code de la route (the French Highway Code). Its purpose is educational rather than punitive, which is why the state allows it to restore points that offences have removed.

How many points you get back

A single course restores up to 4 points. The credit is capped at your licence maximum, so it can never raise your balance above 12 points on a standard licence, or above 6 points on a permis probatoire (probationary licence) that is less than one year old. If you sit at 11 points, the course returns only the 1 point needed to reach 12.

How often you can take it

You may follow one recovery course per rolling 12-month period. The period is measured from the start date of one course to the start date of the next, not by calendar year. In practice this means a full year and a day must pass between two courses that restore points. A course taken inside that window still teaches the same material but returns zero points, so timing it correctly is essential.

What it costs and where it must happen

Each centre sets its own price. There is no national tariff, and the figure typically lands around 200 EUR. The most important rule is where the course takes place. Only a centre approved by the prefet, known as a CSSR (centre de sensibilisation a la securite routiere), can deliver a course that legally restores points.

Lists of approved centres appear on prefecture websites and through the official service-public channels. Many private websites resell course slots and present themselves as authorities on the rules. They are not. The legal approval always rests with the prefecture, and a booking platform cannot certify a course or guarantee point recovery.

When you cannot use the course

The course only works while your licence is still valid and holds at least one point. Once your balance reaches zero, the licence is invalidated, an outcome the French system calls solde nul, and a recovery course can no longer help. Who typically takes the course

Two groups use the voluntary course most. The first are drivers who have dropped to a low balance, often three or four points, and want a buffer before a further offence tips them into invalidation. The second are drivers who know a recent offence has not yet been recorded and want to rebuild their margin in advance. Because the course can only be taken once a year and only restores points you have actually lost, taking it too early wastes the annual slot.

A separate category of driver is required to attend a course rather than choosing to. A permis probatoire holder who loses three points or more receives a registered letter (form 48N) obliging them to complete a course within four months, and a court can order a course as part of a sentence. How to book and what to expect

You choose an approved centre, reserve a place for a specific two-day session, and pay the centre directly. Bring a valid photo ID and your driving licence. Attendance for the full fourteen hours is mandatory; arriving late or leaving early can void the course and the point credit. There is no test, but the sessions are interactive, with group discussion of accident causes, speed, and impairment.

Recovery course versus automatic recovery

It helps to keep two mechanisms apart. Automatic recovery returns points on its own after a clean period: a single lost point comes back after six months without a new offence, and larger blocks return after two or three years depending on the offence. The recovery course is the manual alternative that gives back up to 4 points immediately, once a year. Drivers who have lost several points and cannot afford to wait often combine the two.

A common misconception is that paying for a course can somehow restore a licence that has already been invalidated, or clear an offence from the record. It cannot.
