France Driving Licence Points: Retrait and How to Recover Them

The French driving licence works on a points system, the permis a points. Every driver starts with a set number of points, loses them for traffic offences, and can rebuild the balance over time or through a course. The mechanism is governed by Articles L223-1 and following of the Code de la route (the French Highway Code), and it decides whether you keep the right to drive.

This page explains how points are lost (retrait de points), how many an offence can cost, and how you get them back, both automatically and through a recovery course. It also marks the boundary between running out of points and the separate events of suspension and cancellation, which are covered elsewhere in this cluster.

Information last verified on 22 July 2026. This page presents general legal information, not legal advice.

How many points a licence carries

A standard licence holds 12 points. A newly qualified driver instead holds a permis probatoire (probationary licence) that begins at 6 points and climbs to 12 over two years, or three years for a driver who did not complete supervised training. The probationary phase has its own point rules, explained on our probationary licence page.

Points are not a credit you spend deliberately. They are removed automatically when an offence that carries a deduction becomes final, and the licence stays valid as long as the balance stays above zero.

Losing points: the retrait system

Retrait de points is the loss of points for an offence. Each offence in the Code de la route carries a fixed deduction set by a national scale, from one point for a minor speed excess up to six points for the most serious single offences. The loss becomes effective only once the penalty is final, meaning the fine has been paid, a court has convicted, or a composition penale (an out-of-court settlement) has been accepted.

Two ceilings limit how fast the balance can fall. Under Article L223-2, a single offence can remove at most 6 points. When several offences are committed at the same time, the deductions accumulate but are capped at 8 points in total. These caps are why one traffic stop rarely wipes out a full licence on its own.

Because the loss depends on the penalty becoming final, contesting the underlying fine can matter. See our guide to contesting a traffic fine, and note that many deductions come from speeding penalties.

Getting points back automatically

Points return on their own after a clean period, with the exact wait depending on the offence:

• A single lost point comes back after 6 months with no new offence.
• Points lost for a 2nd or 3rd class contravention return after 2 years.
• Points lost for a 4th or 5th class contravention or a delit (a more serious offence) return after 3 years.

Each period runs from the date the penalty became final and requires a clean record throughout. Commit a new offence in the window and the clock resets. A driver who keeps a non-zero balance and stays offence-free can also see a full reconstitution to 12 points over a longer clean period.

When the loss actually happens

Timing trips many drivers up. A point deduction is not applied the day you are stopped or flashed by a camera. It takes effect only once the penalty becomes definitive, which is the moment the fine is paid, a court ruling is final, or a composition penale is accepted. Paying a fixed fine is treated as an admission and triggers the deduction, so a driver who intends to dispute an offence should be aware that settling the fine ends the argument and removes the points. This is one reason the contest a traffic fine route matters for anyone close to zero.

Because the deduction lags the offence, the recovery clock also starts late. The six-month, two-year, or three-year clean period each begins from the date the penalty became final, not from the date of the stop, so it can feel as though points take longer to return than expected.

Getting points back through a course

The manual alternative is a stage de recuperation de points (points recovery course), which restores up to 4 points at once, capped at your licence maximum, and can be taken once per rolling 12-month period for around 200 EUR. It must be run by a centre approved by the prefet. Full details are on our points recovery course page.

The scale in practice

The national scale ties each offence to a fixed deduction, and the same driver can lose very different amounts depending on the offence. A minor speed excess of under 20 km/h outside a built-up area costs one point. Running a red light, failing to respect a stop sign, or using a phone while driving costs three points. Drink-driving or a serious speed excess can cost six points, the single-offence ceiling. Because the losses are fixed by regulation, two drivers who commit the same offence lose the same number of points regardless of their history.

This is also why the eight-point simultaneous cap matters. A driver stopped once for several offences at the same time, for example speeding while using a phone and without a seatbelt, adds the deductions together but never loses more than eight points from that single stop, even if the individual figures would sum higher.

Probationary drivers

A probationary driver faces the same offences but with a smaller cushion, since the licence begins at six points rather than twelve. Losing three or more points during the probationary period triggers a compulsory awareness course, and losing all six invalidates the licence just as a zero balance does for a full licence holder. The build-up schedule and the compulsory-course rules are detailed on our probationary licence page.

Checking your balance and reaching zero

You can consult your live total through the official Telepoints service using FranceConnect, or by requesting a Releve Integral d'Information at a prefecture. A fine notice does not always reflect your current total, because a deduction only takes effect once the penalty is final, which can lag the offence by weeks or months.

When the balance reaches zero, the licence is invalidated, an administrative event the system calls solde nul. That is not the same as a suspension (a temporary removal) or an annulation (a court cancellation). All three, and how to get driving again after each, are explained on our licence invalidation and cancellation page. For the full driving section, see the driving laws hub.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many points does a French driving licence have?

A standard French licence has 12 points. A new driver holds a probationary licence (permis probatoire) that starts at 6 points and rises to the full 12 over two years, or three years if the driver did not take supervised training. Points are lost through the retrait system and can be rebuilt over time or through a recovery course.

What is the maximum number of points I can lose at once?

A single offence can cost a maximum of 6 points. When several offences are committed simultaneously, the deductions add up but are capped at 8 points in total, under Article L223-2 of the Code de la route. This is why a driver with a full balance rarely loses the entire licence from one traffic stop.

How long does it take to get lost points back automatically?

A single lost point returns after 6 months without a new offence. Points lost for a 2nd or 3rd class contravention return after 2 clean years, and points from a 4th or 5th class contravention or a delit (a more serious offence) return after 3 clean years. The clock runs from the date the penalty becomes final and resets if you commit a new offence in the meantime.

How can I check my current points balance?

You can consult your official balance online through the government Telepoints service, accessed with FranceConnect, or by requesting your Releve Integral d'Information (RII) at a prefecture. These official channels are the only reliable record; a fine notice does not always show your live total.

What happens when my licence reaches zero points?

When the balance hits zero the licence is invalidated, an event the system calls solde nul. You must stop driving, surrender the licence, wait a set period, pass medical and psychotechnical exams, and reapply. This administrative invalidation is explained in detail on our licence cancellation page and is distinct from a suspension or a judicial cancellation.
