Colorado Marriage & Divorce Records: Verifications and County Copies

Colorado's records structure looks conventional until you notice what the state product actually is. CDPHE does not sell a marriage certificate or a divorce decree. It sells a verification: a state-issued confirmation that a registered event occurred. The documents themselves live in county offices.

Knowing which of the three you need, the county certified copy, the court decree, or the state verification, is most of the work. This page covers obtaining records. Colorado marriage records: county first

The county clerk and recorder issues the marriage license and records the completed certificate. C.R.S. 25-2-106 requires each clerk and recorder to report every executed marriage certificate to the state registrar, and it adds that certified copies of marriage certificates may be issued by any clerk and recorder, so the statute is not limited to the issuing county. In practice each office holds only its own county's recordings, so the clerk and recorder that issued the license is the office to write to, and it sets its own fee. CDPHE's own vital-records hub likewise points readers to "County clerk and recorder's offices for marriage records" as a resource distinct from itself.

CDPHE's parallel offering is narrower. In its own words, "Our Office of the State Registrar can provide verification for ceremonial marriages that have been registered with the state." A verification confirms the event is on the state registry. Some agencies accept it, many prefer the county certified copy, so confirm what the receiving agency needs before ordering.

Unlike California, Colorado does not publish hard year gaps in what the state can serve. What CDPHE does not publish is an explicit start year for its coverage, which is a genuine gap in the state's public materials rather than something we failed to find. For older events, treat the county clerk and recorder and the Colorado State Archives as the reliable path.

Common-law marriage is the notable exception

Colorado is one of the few states where a couple can still form a common-law marriage, and that produces a records problem the state names outright: "Official verification of a common-law marriage isn't available." No license was issued, so no registry entry exists.

Some Colorado couples record a notarized affidavit of marriage with a county clerk and recorder, which gives them a documentary trail. That affidavit is not a state verification and does not carry the same weight, but it is often what a common-law spouse can produce. Colorado divorce records: decree versus verification

Branch this before ordering.

The decree of dissolution of marriage is the court judgment, containing the terms: property division, maintenance, parenting time, child support, name restoration. District court clerks hold it. CDPHE's own hub lists "District court clerks for divorce, separation or annulment records" as the authoritative resource, separate from CDPHE.

The dissolution verification from CDPHE confirms that a dissolution registered with the state occurred. It is not the decree and it carries none of the terms. It is the right document when an agency wants proof that a marriage ended and nothing more.

An honest limitation. Colorado does not publish a coverage start year for the dissolution verification anywhere in its public ordering materials, unlike states that hard-code a window. If your divorce is old, do not assume the verification is available. Call the Office of the State Registrar before mailing payment, and be prepared for the district court to be the only source.

CDPHE's own fee schedule reinforces where the authority sits: for a no-record-found search on a dissolution, it directs requesters to contact the judicial court where the dissolution was granted rather than handling it as a state search.

Who may request a Colorado record

Colorado is a restricted-access state, and the gate is statutory rather than agency discretion. C.R.S. 25-2-117(1) provides that vital statistics records shall be treated as confidential, but that the department of public health and environment shall, upon request, furnish to any applicant having a direct and tangible interest in a vital statistics record a certified copy of any record registered under the article. CDPHE cannot waive that standard, and its published requirements restate it: "Proof of your relationship or direct and tangible interest is required. Applicants must submit proof of their relationship or documentation to establish their legal interest in obtaining vital records (e.g., birth or marriage certificates, certified court orders, insurance policies)."

That standard applies across CDPHE's vital records, and marriage, civil union, and dissolution verifications are grouped under one eligibility, identification, and fee framework. Practically, plan to send identification plus something documenting your connection to the record.

We did not locate any Colorado confidential-marriage program comparable to California's, and we did not confirm a categorical sealing regime for marriage or divorce records on an official source. As in every state, an individual court file can be restricted by order in a specific case, which is a case-level outcome and not a statewide category.

Fees and how to order

Figures come from the 2026 fee schedule published by the Office of the State Registrar of Vital Statistics and linked from CDPHE's ordering page, as of August 2026. County clerk and recorder fees and district court copy fees are separate and set locally.

Steps:

1. Decide what you need. County certified marriage copy, court certified decree, or state verification.
2. For the county route, contact the clerk and recorder that issued the license. Any clerk and recorder may issue a certified marriage copy under C.R.S. 25-2-106, but the issuing county is the office that actually holds the recording. For a divorce, contact the district court clerk in the county where it was granted. Ask for the current fee and process.
3. For the state route, use CDPHE's ordering page. CDPHE names three channels: a mail-in application, online ordering through VitalChek by phone or web, and in-person service by appointment only. CDPHE's separate GoCertificates option covers birth and death records only, not marriage or dissolution.
4. Include proof of relationship or direct and tangible interest along with your identification.
5. If you do not know the date, budget for the $1.00-per-year search charge.

Older records and genealogy

CDPHE's own hub names the Colorado State Archives as a resource for "a wide range of historical data," separate from CDPHE and county custody. The Archives is the right stop for older marriage and divorce material, including historical district court holdings that predate current clerk retention.

For a recent record, the county clerk and recorder (marriage) or district court clerk (divorce) remains the fastest and most complete source.
