Lasting Power of Attorney Cost Checker (2026)
Registering a lasting power of attorney in England and Wales costs £92 for each LPA, less if the donor is on a low income or certain benefits. Check the fee for your situation, and the rules in Scotland and Northern Ireland, which use different kinds of power of attorney. You can make one yourself using the official service; you do not need a solicitor.
Registration fee
£184
£92 for each of the 2 LPAs · no solicitor needed
Full fee. Each LPA is registered separately.
Make the LPA yourself using the official online service or the paper forms on gov.uk. You do not need a solicitor.
The online service helps you fill in the forms, but the LPA still has to be printed and signed on paper by the donor, a certificate provider and the attorneys, then sent to the Office of the Public Guardian.
An LPA cannot be used until the Office of the Public Guardian has registered it. If someone loses capacity without one, a family member may need to apply to the Court of Protection to become a deputy.
LPA Fees in England and Wales
The Office of the Public Guardian charges £92 to register each lasting power of attorney (and each enduring power of attorney), from 17 November 2025. There are two types of LPA, one for property and financial affairs and one for health and welfare, so registering both costs £184. If the Office of the Public Guardian could not register an LPA and you correct it and apply again within 3 months, the repeat application costs £46.
| Donor's situation | Fee per LPA | Repeat application |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | £92 | £46 |
| Gross annual income of £12,000 or less | £46 | £23 |
| On a listed means-tested benefit | £0 | £0 |
The benefits that remove the fee are Income Support, income-based Jobseeker's Allowance, income-related Employment and Support Allowance, the guarantee credit part of Pension Credit, Housing Benefit, Council Tax Support, and Working Tax Credit with Child Tax Credit or a disability premium. The exemption does not apply if the donor was awarded personal injury damages of more than £16,000 that were ignored when the benefit was assessed. Universal Credit does not remove the fee, but a donor on it can get the half fee if their income is low enough. Apply for a reduction or exemption with form LPA120, with evidence, at the same time as you send the LPA for registration; refunds cannot be claimed later. If paying would cause financial hardship, you can write to the Office of the Public Guardian to ask for a reduction.
The official online service guides you through making an LPA, but the finished document still has to be printed and signed on paper by the donor, a certificate provider and the attorneys before it is sent for registration. See our lasting power of attorney guide and LPA registration cost guide.
Scotland and Northern Ireland
Scotland uses continuing powers of attorney (money and property) and welfare powers of attorney under the Adults with Incapacity (Scotland) Act 2000. Registration with the Office of the Public Guardian (Scotland) costs £99 from 1 April 2026, rising to £102 on 1 April 2027, and one fee covers a combined continuing and welfare document. There is no fee for a granter on Income Support, income-based Jobseeker's Allowance, Pension Credit guarantee credit, income-related Employment and Support Allowance, or Universal Credit, or on PIP or Adult Disability Payment with income of £26,437 a year or less. See our Scotland guide.
Northern Ireland does not have lasting powers of attorney: the law allowing them has not been brought into force. You can make an enduring power of attorney for property and financial affairs, which is registered with the Office of Care and Protection when the donor is losing capacity. Registration costs £189 from 1 April 2026, rising to £193 on 1 April 2027; you may pay less or nothing if you qualify for a court fee exemption or remission. See our Northern Ireland guide.
If someone has already lost capacity without a power of attorney, the route is slower and costs more: in England and Wales a family member may need to apply to the Court of Protection to become a deputy, in Scotland a guardianship order may be needed from the sheriff court, and in Northern Ireland the Office of Care and Protection can appoint a controller. See our deputyship guide.
