How to apply

Apply online through Courts Service Online, or on paper through the Small Claims Registrar at your local District Court office.

This is a screening tool, not a decision

  • The Small Claims Registrar decides whether your claim is a small claim within the meaning of the District Court Rules. This tool only tells you whether your situation clears the published gates. A green result is not a guarantee your application will be accepted.
  • It works from the categories above, and real disputes rarely fit a category cleanly. If yours is mixed, or you are unsure which box you are in, ask the Registrar at your local District Court office. They deal with this every day and it costs nothing to ask.
  • The €2,000 limit and the €25 fee are set by statutory instrument and can change. Confirm both on courts.ie before you apply.
  • Nothing here is legal advice. If the amount matters to you, if the other side has a solicitor, or if you are close to a time limit, talk to a solicitor. Free advice may be available through the Legal Aid Board or a Citizens Information Centre.
  • Time limits are unforgiving and this tool applies only the general 6-year contract period. When the clock actually started can be arguable, and some claims carry much shorter limits. Do not let a deadline pass on the strength of a screening tool.
