How to Claim UIF: uFiling and Labour Centres (2026)

A UIF claim can be lodged online through uFiling or in person at any of South Africa's 126 Labour Centres. This page sets out the documents needed, the order of the steps, and the time limits to apply.

Two channels: uFiling or a Labour Centre

A UIF claim can be made online through uFiling, the Department of Employment and Labour's online claims system at ufiling.labour.gov.za, or in person at any of the 126 Labour Centres located across the country. uFiling requires registration and a login before a benefit application can be started; a Labour Centre visit does not. The UIF's toll-free line, 0800 843 843, can assist with questions about either channel.

Documents you need

Every claim needs the contributor's 13-digit barcoded South African ID or a passport number, a UI-19 declaration from the employer confirming the employment details, and banking details supplied on a UI 2.8 form so the benefit can be paid out. Once a claim is open, it is kept alive with monthly continuation forms: UI 6A for an unemployment claim, UI 3 for illness, UI 4 for maternity and UI 5 for adoption. A contributor who takes voluntary severance or early retirement instead submits a UI 2.11 form.

The claim windows: 12 months for unemployment and maternity, 6 for illness

Current law gives a contributor 12 months to apply for unemployment benefits, running from the termination of the contract of employment (section 17(2) as amended), and 12 months for maternity benefits, running from the date of childbirth (section 25(1) as amended). This follows from the Unemployment Insurance Amendment Act, 2016, which raised the original six-month window in both sections to 12 months. An illness benefit application has its own, shorter window under section 22(2): six months from the commencement of the period of illness, and the Commissioner may accept a late application on good cause shown.

The Department of Employment and Labour's own Basic Guide to the UIF, still published on labour.gov.za, has not caught up with this change: it tells readers a claim can be submitted within six months of termination or birth. For unemployment and maternity claims, the amended statute controls over an unrevised brochure, so 12 months is the period to rely on. For an illness claim, the six-month window in section 22(2) still stands, running from the start of the illness rather than the end of the contract. If a contributor misses the applicable window, the Commissioner may still accept the application on good cause shown.

What happens after you apply

Once a claim is lodged and the initial documents are accepted, the contributor is paid according to the accrued benefit days and the applicable rate (the income replacement rate for the first 238 days of an unemployment or illness claim, a flat rate for any days after that, and a flat 66% for maternity). Payment continues only while the required continuation forms are submitted on time and the contributor remains eligible. A benefit stops once the accrued days run out, the underlying condition ends (the contributor returns to work, the illness resolves, or the maternity or adoption period elapses), or a continuation form is not submitted.
