Public Holiday Pay in New Zealand: Time and a Half and Alternative Holidays

Frequently Asked Questions

How many public holidays does New Zealand have?

11 national public holidays: New Year's Day, the day after New Year's Day, Waitangi Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Anzac Day, King's Birthday, Matariki, Labour Day, Christmas Day, and Boxing Day. Each region also has its own Provincial Anniversary Day, so most employees observe 12 public holidays a year.

Do I get paid extra for working a public holiday?

If the public holiday is an otherwise working day for you and you work it, your employer must pay at least time and a half for the hours you actually worked, calculated on your relevant daily pay or average daily pay.

What is an alternative holiday?

An alternative holiday, or day in lieu, is a full paid day off that an employee earns when they work on a public holiday that is an otherwise working day for them. It is on top of time-and-a-half pay for the hours worked, and it is taken at another agreed time.

Do I get an alternative holiday if I only work a few hours on the public holiday?

Yes. An employee who works any part of a public holiday that is an otherwise working day gets a full alternative holiday, regardless of how many hours were actually worked.

What happens if a public holiday falls on my day off?

If the public holiday is not a day you would otherwise have worked, you are not automatically entitled to pay or an alternative holiday for it, though your employer can choose to pay you anyway. Waitangi Day and Anzac Day move to the following Monday for pay purposes if they fall on a weekend and you would not otherwise have worked that weekend.
