How the System Works
Unlike Australia or Canada, New Zealand runs a single national demerit system under the Land Transport Act 1998. Every driver, whatever their licence stage, is on the same ladder: once you accumulate 100 demerit points within any two-year period, Waka Kotahi suspends your licence for three months. Points are counted on a rolling two-year window from the date of each offence, so older points drop off over time.
Different offences carry different point values. Officer-issued speeding runs from 10 points for up to 10 km/h over, to 50 points for more than 35 km/h over. Using a hand-held phone is 20 points, careless use is 35, and failing or refusing an evidential breath or blood test is 50. The full schedule is on our demerit points page.
Why Camera Tickets Are Different
The single most misunderstood point is that a speeding ticket from a safety camera carries no demerit points at all. Demerits attach only to an offence an officer detects in person and issues to an identified driver. A camera notice goes to the registered owner of the vehicle, not a proven driver, so it comes with a fine but zero points. The checker reflects this: add a camera-speeding offence and your total does not move.
