Montana requires a bill of sale to title or register a vehicle. Notarization is not required for a Montana vehicle bill of sale. Montana publishes an official form (Form MV24 (Bill of Sale)).
- Montana uses official Form MV24 (Bill of Sale), published by the Montana Department of Justice Motor Vehicle Division (MVD); the same form covers both a vehicle and a vessel.
- No notarization is required for a standard vehicle bill of sale between individuals. The MV24 states notary is 'required only when used in conjunction with Application for Break/Bond Title (MV10) or an Electronic Records Transfer.'
- Effective October 1, 2025, House Bill 165 amended MCA 61-3-220(2) to strike the prior requirement that a title-transfer signature be acknowledged before a county treasurer, authorized official, or notary public (confirmed by the Montana Secretary of State).
- The MVD lists the MV24 Bill of Sale as a required title-transfer document; it must show the same buyer(s) as the Application for Certificate of Title (MV1). Buyers have 40 days from the sale date to transfer ownership.
