Uses a point system
Virginia
Virginia DMV assigns 3, 4 or 6 demerit points per traffic conviction and also awards safe driving points for violation-free years. Point totals within 12 or 24 months trigger an advisory letter, a required driver improvement clinic, or a 90-day suspension.
Other consequences
A demerit-point violation (or safety belt or child restraint violation) committed at age 18 or 19 requires a driver improvement clinic.
Other consequences
Under 18: the first demerit-point conviction requires a driver improvement clinic; a second brings a 90-day suspension; a third brings revocation for one year or until age 18, whichever is longer.
Other consequences
Drivers who reach the suspension level are given the choice, in writing, between the 90-day suspension and enrolling in the Intelligent Speed Assistance Program for nine months; no response within 30 days means suspension.
Other consequences
One safe driving point is added for each full calendar year with a valid Virginia license and no violations or suspensions, up to five.
How long points count
Demerit points count for two years from the date the offense was committed. The conviction itself can stay on the DMV record longer (3, 5 or 11 years, or permanently, depending on the violation).
Point reduction or driver improvement
Voluntarily completing a DMV-certified driver improvement clinic subtracts five demerit points (or adds safe driving points if there are fewer than five demerit points), no more than once in a two-year period. A clinic required by DMV does not earn safe driving points, and a court-ordered one earns them only if the court says so.

What this page does not do
- It does not read your driving record. Only Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles can confirm your current total.
- It does not predict a suspension: levels count only convictions inside each window, and the agency decides.
- It does not cover commercial (CDL) disqualifications or DUI suspensions, which follow separate rules.
