Uses a point system
Vermont
Vermont assesses 2 to 10 demerit points per moving violation conviction, and 10 or more points in a two-year period starts suspension proceedings: 10 days at 10 points, 30 days at 15, 90 days at 20, plus 30 days for each further 5 points.
Other consequences
For a conviction of negligent operation, operation without the owner's consent, failure to stop after a crash, or eluding police, the suspension is at least 30 days (first offense), 90 days (second) or six months (third or later), or the points-based period if longer. A fatality adds one year.
Other consequences
Two additional points are assessed for a violation that caused a crash the violator was found at fault for.
Other consequences
No points are assessed for parking, equipment, size or weight violations.
Other consequences
A learner’s permit or junior operator’s license is also recalled for 90 days after a single speeding violation that results in a 3-point assessment, and for 30 days after a single texting violation.
How long points count
Points stay assessed against the driving record for two years from the date of conviction.
Point reduction or driver improvement
A Superior judge or Judicial Bureau hearing officer may waive points for a moving violation of 3 points or less if the driver had no points in the past five years and no more than 3 points in the past 10 years, was not driving a commercial vehicle, and no one was injured and no one else's property was damaged.

What this page does not do
- It does not read your driving record. Only Vermont Department of Motor Vehicles can confirm your current total.
- It does not predict a suspension: levels count only convictions inside each window, and the agency decides.
- It does not cover commercial (CDL) disqualifications or DUI suspensions, which follow separate rules.
