Uses a point system
Tennessee
Tennessee assigns points for moving violation convictions and crashes, and an adult driver with 12 or more points within any 12-month period is sent a notice of proposed suspension with a chance at an administrative hearing.
Other consequences
A driver under 18 with fewer than 6 points is sent a warning letter, with a copy to a parent or guardian.
Other consequences
Failing to attend the hearing results in a six-month suspension, or 12 months if the driver had Driver Improvement Program suspension action within five years.
Other consequences
A driver may also face proposed suspension for three or more avoidable accidents within one year.
How long points count
Each time a crash or violation is posted, the department looks back 24 months to check whether 12 or more points fell within any 12-month period.
Point reduction or driver improvement
In most cases a driver who requests a hearing is offered a defensive driving class instead of suspension or to shorten it; it must be finished within 90 days of the suspension letter and earns credit only once every five years.

What this page does not do
- It does not read your driving record. Only Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security can confirm your current total.
- It does not predict a suspension: levels count only convictions inside each window, and the agency decides.
- It does not cover commercial (CDL) disqualifications or DUI suspensions, which follow separate rules.
