Uses a point system
Pennsylvania
PennDOT adds points to a driving record when a driver is found guilty of certain moving violations. Corrective action starts at 6 points, and 11 or more points brings an automatic suspension.
Other consequences
A conviction for speeding 31 mph or more over the limit requires a Departmental Hearing and Driver Improvement School, which can lead to an on-road exam or a suspension of up to 15 days.
Other consequences
After a suspended license is restored, the record shows 5 points no matter how many it had before (except after a 15-day suspension from a second 6-point hearing).
Other consequences
A suspension can be appealed to the county Court of Common Pleas within 30 days after the mailing date of the notice.
Other consequences
Some violations carry a suspension on top of points, such as failing to stop for a school bus with flashing red lights (60-day suspension and 5 points).
How long points count
Three points are removed for every 12 consecutive months without a violation that results in points, suspension or revocation, counted from the last violation or restoration date. A record that stays at zero for 12 months starts over as a first accumulation.
Point reduction or driver improvement
At the first 6-point accumulation, passing the special point exam removes 2 points and completing Driver Improvement School removes 4 points.

What this page does not do
- It does not read your driving record. Only Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) can confirm your current total.
- It does not predict a suspension: levels count only convictions inside each window, and the agency decides.
- It does not cover commercial (CDL) disqualifications or DUI suspensions, which follow separate rules.
