Uses a point system
New Jersey
The New Jersey MVC records points for moving violations. Six or more points within three years brings an insurance surcharge, and 12 or more points on the current driving record leads to a license suspension.
Other consequences
Six or more points within three years from the last posted violation brings a $150 surcharge plus $25 for each point over six, and the surcharge can be assessed annually for three years. This is a fee, not a suspension.
Other consequences
Points may also raise insurance rates; the MVC says to contact your insurance carrier for details.
Other consequences
Restoring a suspended license requires a $100 restoration fee.
How long points count
The MVC keeps a permanent record of all points, but points can be deducted for violation-free time or approved courses. For surcharges, points count within three years from the last posted violation.
Point reduction or driver improvement
One year with no violations or suspensions removes 3 points. A Defensive Driving Program removes 2 points (once every five years); a Driver Improvement Program removes 3 points (once every two years, in response to proposed MVC action); a Probationary Driver Program removes 3 points (once, when ordered by the MVC). Insurers may not count these deductions.

What this page does not do
- It does not read your driving record. Only New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission can confirm your current total.
- It does not predict a suspension: levels count only convictions inside each window, and the agency decides.
- It does not cover commercial (CDL) disqualifications or DUI suspensions, which follow separate rules.
