Uses a point system
Maine
Maine assigns demerit points to traffic convictions and adjudications by rule. A driver with 12 demerit points within one year may be suspended for up to 15 days, and points are erased when the conviction becomes one year old.
Other consequences
A notice of assessed demerit points is sent when the total reaches half the suspension level.
Other consequences
Some single offenses carry their own suspension of up to 30 days, including passing a stopped school bus and exceeding the posted speed by at least 30 mph.
Other consequences
A driver suspended three times within three years can face a further suspension of up to 120 days.
Other consequences
A juvenile provisional license holder (first license issued at 18-20, for two years) is suspended for any moving-violation conviction: 30 days for a first, 180 days for a second, one year after that. Intermediate license holders under 18 face 60-day, 180-day and one-year suspensions for restriction violations.
Other consequences
Each violation-free calendar year earns one violation-free credit, up to four.
How long points count
Points for a conviction or adjudication are erased from the driving record when it becomes one year old.
Point reduction or driver improvement
Completing an approved driver improvement course gives one three-point credit, no more than once in 12 months; the credit is erased one year after completion.

What this page does not do
- It does not read your driving record. Only Maine Secretary of State, Bureau of Motor Vehicles can confirm your current total.
- It does not predict a suspension: levels count only convictions inside each window, and the agency decides.
- It does not cover commercial (CDL) disqualifications or DUI suspensions, which follow separate rules.
