Uses a point system
Colorado
Colorado assigns points for traffic convictions under C.R.S. 42-2-127. An adult driver can be suspended at 12 points within 12 consecutive months or 18 points within 24 consecutive months, with lower levels for minor drivers, after a hearing.
C.R.S. 42-2-127 (Colorado Revised Statutes 2024, Colorado General Assembly)
Other consequences
At half the points needed for suspension, the department may send a warning letter or order a preliminary hearing; skipping an ordered preliminary hearing without good cause can lead to suspension.
Other consequences
Once a driver has enough points, the hearing officer has no discretion about whether a suspension enters, but sets its length starting from a base of 6 months, up to a maximum of one year.
Other consequences
No points suspension is made until a hearing has been held or the driver fails to appear for a scheduled hearing.
How long points count
The 12- and 24-month windows run from the date of each violation, but points are added only after conviction. Renewing a license does not reset the count.
Point reduction or driver improvement
For a state penalty assessment notice under C.R.S. 42-4-1701(5), paying the fine and surcharge on or before the due date reduces the points: by two for a violation worth three or more points, and by one for a two-point violation. A municipality or county may choose to apply the same reduction to its own tickets.

What this page does not do
- It does not read your driving record. Only Colorado Department of Revenue, Division of Motor Vehicles (hearings by CDOR Hearings Division) can confirm your current total.
- It does not predict a suspension: levels count only convictions inside each window, and the agency decides.
- It does not cover commercial (CDL) disqualifications or DUI suspensions, which follow separate rules.
