Uses a point system
California
California DMV gives 1 point for most moving-violation convictions and responsible collisions and 2 points for serious offenses. A driver with 4 or more points in 12 months, 6 in 24 months, or 8 in 36 months is presumed a negligent operator, which can mean probation and a suspension.
Other consequences
Any one- or two-point violation or responsible collision during a negligent operator probation period is a probation violation that brings a further suspension order.
Other consequences
The negligent operator program covers drivers 18 and older. Younger provisional drivers enter it if they violate provisional probation or suspension.
Other consequences
Class A or B commercial drivers who request and attend a hearing are measured against higher counts: 6 points in 12 months, 8 in 24 months, or 10 in 36 months.
How long points count
The negligent operator levels count points within 12, 24 and 36 months. The driver record itself shows convictions for three, seven or ten years depending on the conviction.
Point reduction or driver improvement
For the first conviction in any 18-month period that is made confidential after completing traffic violator school, no violation point is counted. This does not apply to commercial license holders, violations in a commercial vehicle, or convictions that would count more than one point.

What this page does not do
- It does not read your driving record. Only California Department of Motor Vehicles can confirm your current total.
- It does not predict a suspension: levels count only convictions inside each window, and the agency decides.
- It does not cover commercial (CDL) disqualifications or DUI suspensions, which follow separate rules.
