Roofing
- state roofing contractor registration: A roofing contractor working for pay in Kansas must hold a registration certificate from the Attorney General. The only small-job exemption is for someone whose every roofing job in the fiscal year is under $2,000 and who does not advertise as a roofer. Issued by Kansas Attorney General, Roofing Registration Unit. K.S.A. 50-6,123(a)(1); 50-6,129(a)(8)
- The $2,000 test is not per job: the exemption covers only someone whose every roofing project during the fiscal year is priced under $2,000. A roofer with even one project of $2,000 or more that year does not fit the exemption.
- The exemption never applies to anyone who advertises or otherwise holds themselves out as a roofing contractor.
- Owners doing roofing on their own dwelling or property are exempt.
- A general contractor can be exempt if it uses a registered roofer and meets the other conditions in K.S.A. 50-6,122(e).
Where to look up contractors in Kansas
- Kansas Attorney General, Roofing Registration Unit: official license search. Search by company name, status, registration number, contact name, city or state.
On the record, check that the name matches your contract, the status is active (not expired, suspended or revoked), the license type covers your job, and the license number matches the one the contractor gave you.
What this tool does not do
- It does not check any one contractor. Only the board's own record shows whether a license is active and what it covers.
- It covers state rules. Cities and counties can add their own licenses and permits, and the tool cannot list every local rule.
- It does not decide whether a contractor broke the law or what you can recover. For a dispute, contact the board or a lawyer.
- It does not cover every specialty trade a state licenses (for example pest control, elevators or well drilling).
